  • Patent number: 11310202
Abstract: In some embodiments, a method receives a packet at an instance of a distributed firewall associated with one of a plurality of workloads running on a hypervisor. Each of the plurality of workloads has an associated instance of the distributed firewall. An index table is accessed for the workload where the index table includes a set of references to a set of rules in a rules table. Each workload in the plurality of workloads is associated with an index table that references rules that are applicable to each respective workload. The method then accesses at least one rule in a set of rules associated with the set of references from the rules table and compares one or more attributes for the packet to information stored for the at least one rule in the set of rules to determine a rule in the set of rules to apply to the packet.

  • Publication number: 20220103521
Abstract: Some embodiments provide a method for a network management and control system that manages a virtual infrastructure deployed across a set of datacenters. The method receives a definition of an application to be deployed in the virtual infrastructure. The application definition specifies a requirement that the application receive data traffic from sources external to the virtual infrastructure. Based on the application definition, the method defines a first set of firewall rules for the application that indicate conditions for allowing data traffic from sources external to the virtual infrastructure. For an existing second set of higher-level firewall rules for data traffic entering and exiting the virtual infrastructure, the method specifies a new firewall rule that directs a network element implementing the sets of firewall rules to apply the first set of firewall rules to any data traffic that is from sources external to the virtual infrastructure and directed to the application.

  • Patent number: 11271904
Abstract: Network firewalls operate based on rules that define how a firewall should handle traffic passing through the firewall. At their most basic, firewall rules may indicate that certain network traffic should be denied from passing through a network firewall or indicate that certain network traffic should be allowed to pass through the network firewall. Manners of handling network traffic beyond simply allowing or denying the network traffic may also be defined by the rules. For instance, a rule may indicate that certain network traffic should be routed to a specific system. Thus, if an administrator of a network firewall determines that certain network traffic should be handled in a certain way by a network firewall, the administrator need only implement a firewall rule defining how that network traffic should be handled in the network firewall.

  • Publication number: 20220030060
Abstract: Some embodiments of the invention provide a method for forwarding data messages between a client and a server (e.g., between client and server machines and/or applications). In some embodiments, the method receives a data message that a load balancer has directed from a particular client to a particular server after selecting the particular server from a set of several candidate servers for the received data message's flow. The method stores an association between an identifier associated with the load balancer and a flow identifier associated with the message flow, and then forwards the received data message to the particular server. The method subsequently uses the load balancer identifier in the stored association to forward to the particular load balancer a data message that is sent by the particular server. The method of some embodiments is implemented by an intervening forwarding element (e.g., a router) between the load balancer set and the server set.

  • Publication number: 20210367830
Abstract: Example methods and systems for dynamic event processing for network diagnosis are described. In one example, a computer system may monitor a runtime flow of multiple packets to detect a set of multiple events associated with the runtime flow. The computer system may perform a first stage of event processing by matching the set of multiple events to a set of multiple signatures that includes a first signature and a second signature. The first signature may be associated with a first mapping rule that is fully satisfied by the set of multiple events. The second signature may be associated with a second mapping rule that is partially satisfied. During a second stage of event processing, the second signature is disregarded. In response to diagnosing an issue associated with the runtime flow, remediation action(s) may be performed.

  • Publication number: 20210359945
Abstract: Some embodiments provide a novel method for load balancing data messages that are sent by a source compute node (SCN) to one or more different groups of destination compute nodes (DCNs). In some embodiments, the method deploys a load balancer in the source compute node's egress datapath. This load balancer receives each data message sent from the source compute node, and determines whether the data message is addressed to one of the DCN groups for which the load balancer spreads the data traffic to balance the load across (e.g., data traffic directed to) the DCNs in the group. When the received data message is not addressed to one of the load balanced DCN groups, the load balancer forwards the received data message to its addressed destination. On the other hand, when the received data message is addressed to one of load balancer's DCN groups, the load balancer identifies a DCN in the addressed DCN group that should receive the data message, and directs the data message to the identified DCN.

  • Publication number: 20210320865
Abstract: A method for a hypervisor to implement flow-based local egress in a multisite datacenter is disclosed. The method comprises: determining whether a first data packet of a first data flow has been received. If the first data packet has been received, then the hypervisor determines a MAC address of a first local gateway in a first site of a multisite datacenter that communicated the first data packet, and stores the MAC address of the first local gateway and a 5-tuple for the first data flow. Upon determining that a response for the first data flow has been received, the hypervisor determines whether the response includes the MAC address of the first local gateway. If the response includes a MAC address of another local gateway, then the hypervisor replaces, in the response, the MAC address of another local gateway with the MAC address of the first local gateway.
