  • Publication number: 20210061657
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for improving thermal management and/or efficiency of reaction systems including a reverse flow reactor for performance of at least one endothermic reaction and at least one supplemental exothermic reaction. The supplemental exothermic reaction can be performed in the recuperation zone of the reverse flow reactor system. By integrating the supplemental exothermic reaction into the recuperation zone, the heat generated from the supplemental exothermic reaction can be absorbed by heat transfer surfaces in the recuperation zone. The adsorbed heat can then be used to heat at least one of the fuel and the oxidant for the combustion reaction performed during regeneration, thus reducing the amount of combustion that is needed to achieve a desired temperature profile at the end of the regeneration step.

  • Patent number: 10919830
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for conversion of gas phase reactants including CO and H2 to C2+ products using multiple catalysts in a single reactor while reducing or minimizing deactivation of the catalysts. Separate catalysts can be used that correspond to a first catalyst, such as a catalyst for synthesis of methanol from synthesis gas, and a second catalyst, such as a catalyst for conversion of methanol to a desired C2+ product. The separate catalysts can be loaded into the reactor in distinct layers that are separated by spacer layers. The spacer layers can correspond to relatively inert particles, such as silica particles. Optionally, the spacer layer can include an adsorbent, such as boron supported on alumina or boron carbide particles. The adsorbent can be suitable for selective adsorption of the one or more reaction products (such as one or more reaction by-products), to allow for further reduction or minimization of the deactivation of the conversion catalysts.

  • Publication number: 20200398220
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for conversion of oxygenate feeds to distillate boiling range products using multiple moving bed reactor stages. The systems and methods allow for multiple stages to be used while avoiding the need for distillation or other boiling point based separation as the mixture of feed and effluent is passed between stages. Instead, a stripping gas is used to disengage the feed and effluent from the catalyst solids. In combination with an improved moving bed reactor design, this can allow substantially all of the feed and effluent from a first moving bed reactor stage to be passed into a second moving bed reactor stage, even when the feed and effluent include both vapor and liquid phase portions.

  • Publication number: 20200399190
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for upgrading of methane and/or small alkanes to distillate boiling range hydrocarbons. The upgrading is performed using a reaction system where various types of integration are provided from downstream reaction stages to upstream reaction stages. Such integration can include recycle of various reaction products as well as thermal integration. Having a reaction system that begins with reforming of hydrocarbons and finishes with production of distillate can enable unexpected synergies between downstream reaction stages and upstream reaction stages.

In some embodiments, the invention provides methods that include a method comprising: collecting oxygen from an algal biofuel production process; and using the collected oxygen in an oxygen-requiring process that requires oxygen as a reactant. In some embodiments, the invention provides systems that include an integrated system comprising: an algal bioreactor that produces biodiesel and oxygen, a pipeline for transporting oxygen to an oxygen-requiring process unit so that the oxygen can be used as reactant in the oxygen-requiring process unit, and the oxygen-requiring process unit.

  • Publication number: 20200248079
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for conversion of light paraffinic gases to form liquid products in a two-stage reaction system. In a first stage, the light paraffinic gas is exposed to heat transfer particles in a side riser, where the heat transfer particles correspond to particles used in a separate process. Examples of a separate process include fluidized coking and fluid catalytic cracking. The conditions in the side riser can be selected to allow for conversion of at least a portion of the paraffins to olefins. After conversion, the converted olefin stream is passed to the second reaction stage while the heat transfer particles are returned to the separate process. The converted olefin stream is then exposed to a conversion catalyst under conditions for forming aromatics from the converted olefin stream in a second reaction stage. By performing the initial alkane conversion to olefins in the first reaction stage, the amount of coke formed during the aromatics formation process is reduced or minimized.

  • Patent number: 10570342
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for solvent deasphalting of steam cracker tar. The resulting deasphalted oil produced from the steam cracker tar can then be hydroprocessed, such as hydrotreated and/or hydrocracked in a fixed bed reactor. The solvent deasphalting can correspond to a mild or trim deasphalting or can correspond to solvent deasphalting at higher solvent to oil ratios. Performing a trim deasphalting can reduce or minimize the amount of deasphalting residue that is formed as a product from the deasphalting process.

  • Patent number: 10188998
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for controlling the flow and transport of catalyst particles within a reaction system. The flow of catalyst particles can be managed using a rotating disc or wheel that is configured within a roller volume to allow for control over the rate of catalyst flow while reducing or minimizing attrition of the catalyst particles. This can be achieved in part by maintaining a relationship between the center of the rotating disc, the inlet for catalyst particles to the roller volume, and the top wall of the roller volume so that catalyst particles are not exposed to compressive forces and/or abrasion during rotation of the disc. Additionally or alternately, the disc and roller volume surfaces can be configured to reduce or minimize the potential for catalyst particles to become trapped in “dead space” regions within the roller volume.
