    Abstract: The present invention provides isolated nucleic acid sequences encoding plant polygalacturonase inhibitor proteins (PGIP) which inhibit the activity of fungal polygalacturonases. Transgenic plants expressing a heterologous PGIP show increased resistance to fungi which normally infect the plants.
