(TNF.alpha.) or/and bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS, endotoxin) extracorporeally from whole blood or/and blood plasma in an extracorporeal perfusion system, the blood or plasma is passed over a cation exchanger and an anion exchanger material. A device according to the invention for the extracorporeal treatment of patient's blood or plasma therefore contains a cation exchanger material and an anion exchanger material wherein these materials are contained in at least one compartment of an extracorporeal perfusion system.
