Abstract: Methods, systems, and media for detecting the presence of a digital media device on a network are provided. In some embodiments, methods for detecting a presence of a particular type of digital media device is provided, the methods comprising: identifying cached device details for devices previously associated with the network; performing a simple device discovery protocol (SSDP) on the network, and substantially concurrently sending a unicast message to an address associated with the identified cached digital media device using hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP); and indicating the presence of a digital media device on the network in response to either (i) receiving a response to the unicast message, or (ii) determining that a type of a device discovered using SSDP is the same as the particular device type.

Abstract: In accordance with some implementations of the disclosed subject matter, mechanisms for presenting recommended media content items are provided. In some implementations, a method for providing media guidance is provided, the method comprising: receiving a request for supplemental content relating to a program being presented by a media device; causing a content interface to be presented on a mobile device; identifying the program that is being presented on a media device; determining keywords associated with the program, wherein each of the keywords is associated with a particular portion of the program; obtaining and storing supplemental content items corresponding to the program based on the keywords; causing the content interface to present a first supplemental content item; receiving state information associated with the mobile device that indicates a subsequent visit to the content interface; and causing the content interface to present a second supplemental content item based on the state information.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and media for presenting comments based on correlation with content are provided. In some implementations, a method for presenting ranked comments is provided, the method comprising: receiving, using a hardware processor, content data related to an item of content; receiving, using the hardware processor, comment data related to a comment associated with the item of content; determining, using the hardware processor, a degree of correlation between at least a portion of the comment data and one or more portions of the content data; determining, using the hardware processor, a priority for the comment based on the degree of correlation; and presenting, using the hardware processor, the comment based on the priority.

The server system sends to the second device the first quotations and a plurality of quotation operation affordances. It receives selection by the first user of a first affordance of the quotation operation affordances for a first one of the first quotations. In accordance with the selection, it performs an operation with respect to the first one of the first quotations.

Abstract: In accordance with some implementations of the disclosed subject matter, mechanisms for providing a remote control interface are provided. In some implementations, a method for providing a remote control interface is provided, the method comprising: receiving an image of a user input interface associated with a media playback device; identifying the user input interface from a plurality of user input interfaces based on image recognition; determining a code library associated with the identified user input interface; and transmitting the code library to a mobile device that provided the image of the user input interface, wherein the code library allows a mobile device to control the media playback device.

Abstract: The various implementations described herein include methods and systems for displaying a summary of media content items. In one aspect, a method is performed at a server system that includes processors and memory storing programs for execution by the processors. The server system: (1) detects presentation of a media content item at a first device in proximity to a second device, including receiving from the second device content identification information; (2) identifies the media content item; (3) identifies entities related to the identified media content item; (4) determines a level of interest with respect to a user of the second device, for each of the identified entities; (5) selects a subset of the identified plurality of entities based on the determined level of interest; and (6) sends to the second device, a summary of the media content item, for presenting at the second device.

Abstract: The various implementations described herein include methods, devices, and systems for clarifying media content. In one aspect, a method is performed at a client device that includes a microphone, memory, and one or more processors. The method includes: (1) while a media content item is playing on a second client device in proximity to the client device, receiving, via the microphone, a verbal query from a user of the client device; (2) sending a request to a remote server system; (3) receiving from the remote server system information responsive to the verbal query for a portion of the media content item; and (4) presenting the information to the user.

Abstract: A method is performed at a server system. The server system receives from an electronic device media content information. The server matches the media content information with stored content information, and identifies a media content item based on the matching. It also identifies a genre of the media content item and one or more entities relevant to the identified media content item. The server generates one or more user-selectable elections based on the genre of the media content item. It sends to the electronic device the user-selectable elections and a plurality of affordances. Each of the affordances provides a user of the electronic device with one of the user-selectable elections corresponding to a respective entity that is relevant to the identified media content item. The server receives from the electronic device a selection of the one or more user-selectable elections, and performs an operation associated with the selection.

Abstract: An audience measurement service may monitor broadcasts in a region, ingesting closed captioning data, metadata, displayed text or logos, performing facial recognition on people, and/or generating audio/video fingerprints of broadcast content to create a database of content and associated keywords, along with times at which the content was broadcast. The audience measurement service may receive user search queries from a search provider and detect “spiking” queries. The audience measurement service may determine whether the spiking queries are related, contextually and temporally, to an item of content identified in the database, and infer that users generating the queries likely viewed the item of content. In some implementations, the audience measurement service may also infer that the users likely viewed other items of content (e.g. advertisements) displayed during the prior or subsequent few minutes on the same broadcast channel as the query-triggering item.

The frequency of submitting queries from the set during the first time span exceeds the frequency of submitting queries from the set during an average span of time. The process correlates the spike to a video program by matching terms from the set of search queries to subtitle terms appearing in the video program at a first location. The first location in the video program was presented within a predefined time before the first span of time. The process receives notification from a user device indicating user interest in the video program. The process transmits to the user device search results corresponding to some search queries from the set of search queries.

Abstract: A process adapts user-initiated search queries. The process executes at a client device with a microphone. The process downloads audio fingerprints from a remote server for a plurality of video programs, and downloads information that correlates the audio fingerprint to the video programs. The audio fingerprints are preselected according to relevancy criteria, including stored user preferences and prior search queries by the user. The audio fingerprints and correlating information are stored locally. The process detects ambient sound using the microphone and computes one or more sample audio fingerprints from the detected ambient sound. The process matches a sample audio fingerprint to a locally stored audio fingerprint and uses the correlating information to identify a first video program corresponding to the matched sample audio fingerprint. The process then receives user input to initiate a search query. The process provides auto-complete suggestions for the search query based on the first video program.
