    Abstract: A system and method to automatically provide frame count, frame identification and status information to each frame within a modular, multi-frame tape library system. In the exemplary embodiment, signals are generated by each frame that have a delay value specific to each frame, which are accumulated and supplied to each frame to determine the total number of frames within the tape library system. A reference pulse is generated by each frame and compared to the delay signal generated by each frame to determine its own identification among the plurality of individual frames. Similarly, a status signal is generated by each frame and supplied to each frame which is indicative, for example, of a door open or other anomaly that can be monitored by all the frames within the tape library system.

    Abstract: A thermal barrier coating (TBC 26) and method for forming the TBC (26) on a component (10) characterized by a stabilized microstructure that resists grain growth, sintering and pore coarsening or coalescence during high temperature excursions. The TBC (26) contains elemental carbon and/or a carbon-containing gas that increase the amount of porosity (32) initially within the TBC (26) and form additional fine closed porosity (32) within the TBC (26) during subsequent exposures to high temperatures. A first method involves incorporating elemental carbon precipitates by evaporation into the TBC microstructure. A second method is to directly incorporate an insoluble gas, such as a carbon-containing gas, into an as-deposited TBC (26) and then partially sinter the TBC (26) to entrap the gas and produce fine stable porosity within the TBC (26).

    Abstract: A fuel cell stack includes at least one fuel cell unit and a number of interconnects defining at least two openings and including at least one flow field for flowing a reagent. Each opening defines a respective fuel manifold, including at least one each of intake and exhaust fuel manifolds. The fuel cell unit includes an anode, a cathode, and an electrolyte disposed therebetween. The anode is adjacent to and in both electrical connection and fluid communication with one of the interconnects, which has a flow field that guides a fuel flow between the intake and exhaust fuel manifolds. The cathode is adjacent to and in both electrical connection and fluid communication with another interconnect with a flow field that guides an oxidant flow. The fuel cell stack includes a perimeter isolation seal and at least two interior isolation seals for sealing the electrolyte to the respective interconnects.

    Abstract: A power limiting system and method are provided for limiting power delivered to a common bus in a one or multi-frame tape library environment. The system includes one or more frames coupled to a common bus, each of which is capable of delivering power to the common bus. Each frame comprises current limiting circuitry to limit the power delivered by that frame to the common bus. In exemplary embodiments, the current limiting circuitry of each frame includes a current limiting resistor and a blocking diode coupled to a local power source to limit the power delivered by that frame and to prevent feedback respectively. Additionally, each frame of the system includes a relay capable of receiving a limited power from the common bus, being energized, and, consequently, providing for the respective frame to be powered by a main power supply.

    Abstract: A method for preparing a medical device having the steps: (1) treating an ionically crosslinked hydrogel to strip a substantial amount of the ionic crosslinks while retaining the hydrogel in a desired shape; and (2) ionically re-crosslinking the treated hydrogel of step (1) while retaining the hydrogel in the desired shape. In an exemplary embodiment, a ureteral stent is made by mounting a length of extruded calcium or barium alginate tubing onto a shaping jig and performing secondary shaping to form coil-shaped ends by soaking the mounted robing in a stirred potassium chloride bath, and then soaking it in a calcium chloride bath. The ends readily return after elastic deformation to their coil shapes, with the stent having a permanent memory imposed by the secondary shaping.

For example, polysaccharide-based hydrogels, such as barium alginate, are formed into tubing, shaped into pigtail stents, and exposed to an aqueous solution containing an elasticity agent such as potassium ions, sodium ions, sorbitol, glucose, citric acid, mannitol, dulcitol, or glycerol. The solution may also contain a crosslinking agent, such as calcium ions, to achieve the desired degree of elasticity.

Such vector may be employed in conjunction with a shuttle cloning vector having complementary cloning sites to accomplish transfers of genes and/or promoters between the shuttle cloning vector and the retroviral vector. Such a system provides for efficient transfer of genes and/or promoters to a retroviral vector without necessitating reconstruction of the entire retroviral vector. Also contemplated within the scope of the present invention is a retroviral vector having a 3' LTR wherein at least the promoter sequence of the 3' LTR is mutated such that the promoter sequence becomes nonfunctional.
