  • Patent number: 7011518
Abstract: An orthodontic palatal expander appliance comprising an expansion screw, extensions leading from opposite ends of the expansion screw and contoured tooth engaging portions fixed to the ends of the extensions and being entirely of thermoplastic material and being shaped to conform to and grasp selected ones of a patient's teeth. The buccal, linqual and occlusal surfaces are completely covered by the thermoplastic material. The material is trimmed carefully to match the gingival contour around each tooth. The inner tooth contacting surface of each contoured tooth engaging portion is abrasively etched by means of a pressurized spray of micron-size abrasive particles. A physically bonding orthodontic adhesive, such a resin modified glass ionomer adhesive, is applied to the abrasively etched surfaces to releasably bond the contoured tooth engaging portions to the patient's teeth.

  • Patent number: 6837246
Abstract: An intra-oral appliance in the form of a tongue-airway functional appliance which restores/encourages training of the tongue, which encourages patients to breathe through the nose, and which can serve as a diagnostic aid or test device to access a patient's problems. The appliance includes a body of plastic material having an arcuate-shaped portion along which is defined a recess for receiving teeth of a dental arch of a patient, preferably the upper arch. The appliance further includes a curved platform or extension from the body running from the area of the lingual gingival margin of all teeth inferiorly (toward the mandible) forming a ā€œUā€ or cup-shaped portion or sling which passes under the tongue laterally and anterior to posterior. In another embodiment, nubs or projections are provided on the walls of the teeth-receiving recess for enhancing retention of the appliance.

  • Patent number: 5752523
Abstract: A facial growth indicator is used to measure the linear distance from an incisal edge of either a permanent or primary maxillary incisor to the intersection of a line constructed from the center of the ear, passing forward through the most anterior point on the soft tissue of the nose. A patient's measurement can be compared to a normal standard expected for a child at his or her particular age. If the child being examined has an abnormal measurement, then further diagnostic tests can be performed on the child.
