Patent number: 11402469Abstract: A drone detection radar configured to identify, from information present on returns reflected from a target, the presence of a drone, by identification, within Doppler information on the returns, of: i) Doppler signals being characteristic of rotating parts of a motor; ii) Doppler signals being characteristic of rotating parts of a blade; and, by identification from temporal information in the reflected returns; and iii) signals being characteristic of flashing of the blade of a drone. The target is assumed to be a drone if signals i, ii, and iii are present above respective predetermined thresholds. The largest return from a drone is often from the body, but this is often filtered by a clutter filter. The identified parameters therefore improve detection ability. The characteristic form of the Doppler signals in some instances allow the body return to be implied, thus providing information as to drone velocity.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 2017Date of Patent: August 2, 2022Assignee: QINETIQ LIMITEDInventor: Stephen Anthony Harman

Patent number: 11061114Abstract: A radar system for the detection of drones, including a transmitter, a receiver and a processor, wherein the processor is arranged to process demodulated return signals in a first process using a Doppler frequency filter, and to store locations of any detections therefrom, and to process the demodulated signals in a second process to look for signal returns indicative of a preliminary target having a rotational element at a location, and should a detection be found in the second process, to then attempt to match a location of the preliminary target with returns from the first process, and to provide a confirmed detection if a location of a detection from the first process matches with the location of a detection from the second process. The disclosed subject matter enables improved detection rates for drones, by looking for outputs from both the first and second processes.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 2017Date of Patent: July 13, 2021Assignee: QINETIQ LIMITEDInventor: Stephen Anthony Harman

Patent number: 10877130Abstract: A drone detection radar can include a plurality of antenna systems, each antenna system being arranged to transmit a signal into an associated sector, and to receive signals reflected from targets in the sector, the sectors collectively forming a monitored volume, and wherein a sub-set of the antenna systems are active at any one time, with the active sub-set of antenna systems being arranged to monitor their respective volumes for a duration sufficient to measure Doppler signals associated with slow moving drones, with the radar being arranged to switch to a different sub-set of antenna systems after each duration, such that the whole volume is monitored within a predetermined period. Combining a staring array from an antenna system with a plurality of switched antenna system allows drones to be both detected and tracked, with appropriate selection of the predetermined period.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 2017Date of Patent: December 29, 2020Assignee: QINETIQ LIMITEDInventor: Stephen Anthony Harman

Publication number: 20130021194Abstract: A system for detecting munitions in flight comprises a radar transmitter, receiver, and associated antennas, wherein the antennas are oriented to include ground level coverage, and where a receive antenna is arranged to provide a plurality of receive beams. The system further incorporates a Doppler filter arranged to reject targets that have velocity profiles that do not match those expected of targets of interest. If a target of interest is detected then an indication is provided, preferably in the form of an audible alert, allowing those nearby time to take cover. The system provides a simple munitions detection capability that may operate in CW mode to allow rapid detection, and may also have means such as switchable FMCW, and elevation measurement to allow estimation of possible landing areas of the target.Type: ApplicationFiled: March 30, 2011Publication date: January 24, 2013Applicant: QINETIQ LIMITEDInventors: Stephen Anthony Harman, Andrew Linton Hume

Publication number: 20070232956Abstract: A medical device having a housing (2) with a bore (3) and a lancet (1) slidably fitting in the bore. The lancet operates as a positive displacement piston. In a retracted position, in which the lancet is rearwardly displaced along the bore to define a fluid-containing space in the bore forwardly on the lancet tip, the fluid-containing space has a cross-section dimension to allow fluid to be retained therein by surface tension. The device has a seal (6) operable substantially to prevent flow of fluid from the fluid-containing space past the seal means on movement of the lancet. Displacement of the lancet between the puncture and retracted positions provides suction for drawing fluid into and along the fluid-containing space from the forward end of the bore, and/or pressure for expelling fluid from the fluid-containing space via the forward end of the bore. Also disclosed are methods for operating the device.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 13, 2005Publication date: October 4, 2007Applicant: MICROSAMPLE LTD.Inventors: Anthony Harman, John Cassells

Publication number: 20070104651Abstract: A therapeutic foam for the treatment of, inter alia, varicose veins comprises a sclerosing solution foamed with a physiological gas such as carbon dioxide, oxygen or a mixture thereof. The foam has a nitrogen content of less than 0.8%. It may be generated using a pressurised canister system incorporating a fine mesh of micron dimensions through which the gas and sclerosing liquid are passed to make the foam. Alternatively, the foam may be generated by passing gas and solution between two syringes through a fine mesh. Techniques are described for minimising the amount of nitrogen in a canister or syringe based product. A technique for generating and delivering foam simultaneously using a syringe based device is also disclosed.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 17, 2004Publication date: May 10, 2007Inventors: David Wright, Anthony Harman, Nikki Robinson, Garry Hodges, Adil Kadar, Geoffrey Moggridge, Hugh Van Liew

Publication number: 20070051426Abstract: A foam transfer device (600) is described, for use with aerosol canister apparatus for producing a sclerosant foam for the treatment of, inter alia, varicose veins. The device enables diversion of an initial quantity of below-specification foam from the canister to waste, e.g. to an integral waste chamber, before dispensing a further quantity of foam for use in treatment. The switching of the flow from the waste chamber to a different outlet (618) for use is accomplished without interrupting the flow from the aerosol canister since this would cause the foam to drop below specification again. The waste chamber may be transparent so that the foam entering it can be observed and a decision made by a user when to stop diverting foam to waste. Alternatively, the foam may be diverted automatically e.g. when a set time has elapsed or a set volume of foam dispensed. The foam for use is normally dispensed into a syringe for subsequent injection into a varicose vein of a patient.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 9, 2004Publication date: March 8, 2007Applicant: BTG International LimitedInventors: Anthony Harman, David Wright, Jam Mijers, Stuart Kay, Christopher Huristone, Julian Dixon, Andrew Pocock, Brendan Hogan
