  • Patent number: 4323968
Abstract: A two-level storage hierarchy for a data processing system is directly addressable by the main processor. The two-level storage includes a high speed, small cache with a relatively slower, much larger main memory. The processor requests data from the cache and when the requested data is not resident in the cache, it is transferred from the main memory to the cache and then to the processor. The data transfer organization maximizes the system throughput and uses a single integrated control to accomplish data transfers.

  • Patent number: 4298929
Abstract: A data processing system including at least one channel and a multilevel store has the capability of performing a channel write to main memory where the data to be written into main memory crosses a double word boundary in a partial write store. The partial write store is accomplished by a merge operation which takes place in the memory system in a manner such that the main processor, channel and a cache store are freed up for further operation prior to the completion of the write to main memory.

  • Patent number: 4084231
Abstract: This is a multi level or hierarchial memory system for a multi processing system in which two or more processing units access the memory system. This memory system has two types of memory units on each level with the exception of the lowest level. One of the types of units is called the data store and is for storing all the data at any given level of the memory. The other type of unit is called the copy back store and is for storing all the changes that have been made in data at that level either by addition or modification. The next to lowest level of the hierarchy the data store and copy back stores are embodied in magnetic disc units and the lowest level of the hierarchy the data stores are embodied in a tape unit with multiple input stations. The disc and tape units are all serially strung together on two independent accessing loops which access the tape unit through a different one of the input stations of the tape unit.
