Publication number: 20210177618Abstract: An expandable spinal implant includes a distal projection extending from only one side of the implant, ending in an anterior tip, the anterior portion and anterior tip defining an elongated distal end hook, which is wider than the proximal end. The distal end hook rotates around the spinal cord, aligning the implant with a desired pathway, then inserts into place in the disc space between the vertebrae. The elongated widened distal end hook provides a TLIF approach, distributes loads, provides anterior rim engagement, and creates lordosis.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 26, 2021Publication date: June 17, 2021Inventors: Charles Branch, Charles Fisher, Mladen Djurasovic, Marcel Dvorak, Sigurd Berven, Anthony J. Melkent, Jonathan M. Dewey, Keith E. Miller, Adriaan J. Kuyler

Patent number: 11033402Abstract: An expandable interbody implant adapted for insertion at least into a disc space, between two adjacent vertebrae of a spine. An upper member and a lower member are pivotally connected at least by a drive link. A bone graft storage portion packed with a selected volume of bone growth material. A translational wall is provided between the bone graft storage portion and a trailing end of the implant. An actuator engages the bone graft storage portion, pushing it forward into engagement with the drive link, which pivots upward, moving the upper member upward away from the lower member. Upward movement of the upper member raises the translational wall to a position to assist in retention of the selected volume bone graft material within the hollow portion of the bone graft storage portion. Upward rotation of the drive link brings a face thereof into contact with a front of the bone graft storage portion, thereby retaining near constant volume of the bone graft material.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 2018Date of Patent: June 15, 2021Assignee: Warsaw Orthopedic, Inc.Inventors: Anthony J. Melkent, William D. Armstrong, Stanley T. Palmatier

Patent number: 10898153Abstract: Apparatus and methods are disclosed for use within an image-guided surgical navigation system for facilitating the combined positioning and orientation of multiple surgical implements. A tool guide having multiple cannulas is tracked by a surgical navigation system in real time. Position data of the tool guide is registered and combined with pre-acquired images by the navigation computer. Concurrent graphical representations of the plurality of cannulas are superimposed over the images and displayed. The display allows the surgeon to place the tool guide into the patient's body and position and orient the plurality of cannulas which are then used to place each of the implements.Type: GrantFiled: January 24, 2011Date of Patent: January 26, 2021Assignee: Medtronic Navigation, Inc.Inventors: Anthony J.
