Abstract: A method and system for efficiently scanning a computer storage volume for pestware is described. One embodiment determines whether a file on the storage device has been modified since it was last scanned for pestware; includes the file in a set of files to be scanned for pestware when it is determined that the file has been modified since it was last scanned for pestware; omits the file from the set of files to be scanned for pestware when it is determined that the file has not been modified since it was last scanned for pestware; scans the files in the set of files for pestware; and reports results of the pestware scan to a user.

Abstract: A method and system for counting files and directories in a New-Technology-File-System (NTFS) volume that are relevant to a computerized process is described. One illustrative embodiment counts bits corresponding to used MFT entries in a Master File Table (MFT) bitmap associated with the NTFS volume to obtain a first count; counts one or more files or directories in the NTFS volume that are not relevant to the computerized process to obtain a second count; subtracts the second count from the first count to obtain a count of files and directories in the NTFS volume that are relevant to the computerized process; and displays a progress indicator that indicates, with the passage of time, what proportion of the files and directories included in the count of files and directories in the NTFS volume that are relevant to the computerized process has been processed by the computerized process.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus used for tightening tire chains. One embodiment of the present invention includes a top portion and a bottom portion. The top and bottom portions have a plurality of first and second apertures, respectively. A plurality of arms are secured onto the bottom portion and extends through the second aperture and then through the first apertures. The arms have a first end which is adapted to be secured onto the bottom portion, and a second end which is adapted to secure to a tire chain. A bar variably couples the top portion and the bottom portion. The distance between the top and bottom portion add or subtract tension in the arm which correspondingly adds or subtracts tension in the tire chain.

Abstract: A computer having storage apparatus with protected and drive data areas and with an operating system stored in the storage apparatus. The computer is controlled to select a hard drive of the storage apparatus and determine if the selected hard drive has a protected area for storing diagnostic programs and data in combination with a drive data area for storing user information. The computer has operating apparatus for adjusting sizes of the selected hard drive protected and drive data areas in accordance with requirements of a user of the computer and for reallocating storage of data in the adjusted data areas.

Abstract: A portable computer system with a special connector, on the motherboard, into which a field-installable boot card can be inserted. The special motherboard connector is wired so that the operator, by setting connections on the field-installable boot card, can bypass the boot memory on the motherboard and force the computer to boot from the memory on the boot card. This permits a technician, in the field, to temporarily override the internal nonvolatile memory which holds the basic system software. This permits recovery of a system in which the basic system software has been corrupted. Preferably the motherboard boot memory is a flash EPROM, and can be rewritten, by setting appropriate jumpers on the boot card, after the computer has booted from the boot card. The motherboard connector is preferably located on the motherboard, and is accessible through a removable cover. This connector can also preferably be used for temporary attachment of a diagnostic display card.
