  • Patent number: 8364755
Abstract: An application for a system for providing a customized digital yearbook includes a server, a personal computer connected to the server and a user device for presenting content on a display. Yearbook software creates yearbook user accounts for users of the system and, after the yearbook software creates each yearbook user account, the yearbook software communicates with social network software and the social network software creates a corresponding social network user account. The yearbook software receives yearbook data from the personal computer through the network and stores the yearbook data in the database and the yearbook software extracts approved yearbook data, that data being a subset of the yearbook data that is approved for distribution. The social networking software provides features such as maintaining buddy lists, posting text, messages, images and/or video, messaging between buddies, and displaying of the postings of yourself and others.

  • Patent number: 7127242
Abstract: Personal information is transferred between an old appliance and a new appliance by use of communication capabilities of the appliances. A transfer facility on the old appliance is used to select the information to transfer. A receive facility on the new appliance is provided to verify the information prior to finalizing the transfer. The personal information is translated by either facility as desired, and the information is optionally encrypted, compressed and verified. The facilities are downloaded from a network and are modified based on characteristics of the appliances exchanging personal information. The personal information includes preferences for operation of the appliance. Telephony and wireless communication methods such as cellular are employed for the exchange in various embodiments.

  • Publication number: 20040258390
Abstract: PVR devices are improved with the addition of network connectivity, including, ethernet, HPNA, wireless (e.g., 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g), and powerline, and the inclusion of a virtual storage management system (VSM). The VSM allows the user to setup either parts of hard disks in computer systems on the network and/or allows a user to setup specific entire hard disk drive(s) in computers on the network to be used as storage space for programs recorded using the user's PVR. The virtual storage manager is provided with logic capable of dividing up the storage of programs in real time, that is, to store blocks of the program in different hard disk drives physically located at different locations on the network.

  • Publication number: 20040225711
Abstract: A system is disclosed for administering a computing grid including a grid manager computer and grid computers utilizing a communications network for permitting communication therebetween. A method aspect includes receiving a parameter communicated from each of a plurality of the grid computers, with the parameter characterizing an aspect of the grid computer communicating the parameter. At least two grid computers are logically grouped together in a virtual subgrid of grid computers on the computing grid. Each of the computers of the subgrid may have a similar level of the parameter, or may have a similar relationship to a reference level of the parameter. A job is assigned to one or more computers of the subgrid when the job requires a level of the parameter that that is characteristic of the grid computers of the subgrid.

  • Patent number: 5848250
Abstract: A system for upgrading a personal computer includes a motherboard having upgrade sockets for upgrading the CPU and the clock oscillator without the need to remove any components. The system includes sensing circuitry for detecting the type of component plugged into the upgrade socket and circuitry for disabling the upgraded component. In addition, the system includes software for reconfiguring various signals depending on the particular upgrade plugged into the upgrade socket. By providing a system that can be upgraded by merely inserting a newer components, upgrades can be performed rather quickly. In addition, the upgrade system allows the end user a plurality of upgrade options while at the same time allows the end user to take advantage of declining CPU prices.
