  • Publication number: 20240028395
Abstract: A data center management system may predict localized weather conditions for a location of a data center during a period of time. The data center management system may determine whether the localized weather conditions will degrade an operation of the data center during the period of time. The data center management system may obtain computational workload information identifying one or more computational workloads scheduled for execution at the data center during the period of time. The data center management system may determine, based on the computational workload information, one or more priorities associated with the one or more computational workloads. The data center management system may schedule the one or more computational workloads for execution based on the one or more priorities and based on determining whether the localized weather conditions will degrade the operation of the data center.

  • Patent number: 10578771
Abstract: A set of characteristics of a period is extracted from a forecast that is applicable to the period and a geographical area. From a repository, a set of historical data is selected corresponding to a historical period, the set of historical data including a historical forecast related to the geographical area, and an actual measurement of wind at a location in the geographical area, the set of historical data having a subset of the set of characteristics. From the set of historical data, a function is computed to represent a discrepancy between the historical forecast and the actual measurement over the historical period. A bias value is computed from the function. By applying the bias to a value in the forecast, an adjusted forecast is produced of winds at a wind turbine located at a location in the geographical area.

  • Patent number: 10318558
Abstract: Methods and arrangements for automating weather model configurations. Characteristics of a target geographical area are received, as are a plurality of existing weather model configurations which are implemented for undertaking weather modeling in other geographical areas. A subset of the existing weather model configurations is selected, the subset comprising configurations corresponding to geographical areas having characteristics similar to the characteristics of the target area. A weather model is run with respect to each configuration in the subset of existing weather model configurations. Based on the running of a weather model with respect to each configuration, an output set of weather model configurations is selected for undertaking weather modeling in the target area.

  • Publication number: 20170286838
Abstract: A method for predicting solar power generation receives historical power profile data and historical weather micro-forecast data at a given location for a set of days. Based on power output features for the days, clusters are generated. A classification model that assigns a day to a generated cluster according to weather features is created. For each cluster, a regression model that takes as input weather features and outputs predicted solar power is built. A system includes a sensor for collecting meteorological data at a solar farm, a meter for measuring photovoltaic power output of the solar farm, and a computer processor for executing instructions to predict solar power generation at the solar farm according to the method disclosed, based on data from the sensor and the meter, for a predefined time period. Further instructions predict solar power generation at the solar farm based on a micro-forecast for the solar farm.

  • Patent number: 7136243
Abstract: Improvements in placement of timing patterns in self-servowriting include correcting for systematic errors due to geometric effects. A correction is made for varying systematic errors, such as when the recording head has spatially separate read and write elements. Further, servopattern rotation due to residual or unmeasured systematic errors is reduced by using a once per revolution clock index derived from the motor drive current waveform or any other sensor. In one aspect of correcting for systematic errors in the writing of timing patterns on a storage medium of a storage device, a time interval between a trigger pattern written at a first radial position of the storage medium and a rotational index is measured. The rotational index is related to the rotational orientation of the storage medium with respect to a fixed frame of the storage device.

  • Patent number: 6819513
Abstract: A disk drive which incorporates separate actuators for each recording head so as to only place required recording heads over the recording media of multiple surface hard disk drives. The reduction in recording heads that are placed over the recording media reduces drag on the rotating disk holding the recording media and thereby reduces the power consumption. Reducing the number of recording heads over the recording media also reduces damage to the recording media surfaces in the event of a physical shock to the drive since inactive transducer heads are not in a position to damage the recording media.

  • Patent number: 5527110
Abstract: A method and apparatus for mapping the character and location of small surface variations on a planar surface. Energy is supplied to an object in close proximity to the planar surface to thereby raise the temperature of the object. The object is moved with respect to the planer surface substantially constant. A decrease in temperature of the object is detected when it is in proximity to the variation to define the location and character of the variation. The energy supply may be thermal energy or optical energy but preferably is electrical energy which heats a resistive element. Preferably, the object is the magnetoresistive head of a disk drive assembly. The surface may be that of a magnetic recording material. The change in temperature is detected by monitoring the resistance of the magnetoresistive coil of the head. The energy may be supplied in pulses to obtain higher peek temperatures while avoiding mechanical distortion of the object.

  • Patent number: 5392169
Abstract: A method and apparatus for conditioning a magnetic read/write head to substantially eliminate read-back pulse distortions associated with unfavorable magnetic domain patterns in the head stores the polarity of the last write current pulse of a write pulse train applied to the head-coils. This polarity is compared to a pre-determined reset current pulse polarity. If the last write current polarity is opposite to the reset current polarity, then a reset pulse, or a series of pulses, having the pre-determined reset polarity is applied to the head prior to performing a read operation with the head. The pre-determined reset polarity corresponds to the polarity that resets the head to the magnetic domain state most preferred for reading due to reduction of read-back distortion. The reset pulse, or pulse train, according to the present invention is of constant polarity. If the last write current pulse polarity is the same as the reset polarity, then no reset pulse is applied to the head.

  • Patent number: 5115664
Abstract: A system for measuring transient friction of a head-disk interface in a magnetic disk storage device employs a servo system for accurate measurements. A first movable member carries a slider simulating a magnetic head which rests on a disk when said disk is at rest. The movable member is movably mounted to a second fixed member. A frictionless detector detects a displacement of the movable member relative to a position of the fixed member produced by a force due to friction when the disk spins. A servo system maintains a fixed distance between first and second members in response to an output from the detector and moves the movable member in response thereto. The output is taken from the servo system and provides a signal proportional a force due to friction exerted on said movable member.
