  • Publication number: 20090317467
Abstract: A therapeutic composition is described comprising a particulate dispersion of a hydrocolloid in a low water activity anti-microbial matrix. The composition may also contain any or all of a sequestrant, excipient, carrier and surfactant. The hydrocolloid may be naturally occurring, semisynthetic or synthetic. The invention extends to a method of producing a therapeutic composition. The composition is prepared by mixing a low water activity anti-microbial matrix with hydrocolloid particles at a temperature that will not cause degradation of the matrix. The method may also include the addition of other components such as excipients, sequestrants, carriers and surfactants and other agents. The invention extends to methods for treating a human or animal subject by applying or administering the composition to the subject subject in a therapeutically effective dose.

  • Publication number: 20040121020
Abstract: A therapeutic composition is described comprising honey or a honey derivative, a fatty ester wax or wax-like compound and a surfactant. The honey or derivative may comprise a single type of honey or may be a mixture of two or more different types of honey. The fatty ester, wax or wax-like compound preferably has a melting point around 45° C. or less and most preferably between 40 and 43° C. The wax may be myristyl myristate. The surfactant is preferably ethoxylated sweet almond oil but may also comprise ethoxylated caster oil and ethoxylated evening primrose oil. The preferred embodiment comprises honey or honey derivative 80%, myristyl myristate 15% and ethoxylated sweet almond oil 5%. The invention extends to a method of producing a therapeutic honey composition by heating the honey to a temperature that will not cause degradation of one or more functional enzymes of the honey, combining wax and surfactant by heating and mixing and cooling the mixture before mixing it with honey.
