Patent number: 7343672Abstract: A new and improved fastening system for attaching relatively thin-gauge sheet metal members, such as, for example 14-25 gauge sheet metal members, wherein the power output parameters of the power tool are controlled such that when the driver blade member of the power tool acts upon each one of the brad-type nail fasteners, the brad-type nail fasteners will attain a predetermined velocity value, such as, for example, within the velocity range of 1000-2500 in/sec. Any one of various different types of power tools may be employed, and in addition, various geometrical characteristics of each brad-type fastener are important, such as, for example, the tip geometry, the aspect ratio A/R of the shank member of the fastener, and the use of an adhesive or painted coating upon the external surface areas of the shank member of the fastener. The fasteners preferably comprise dual-width fasteners which exhibit enhanced pull-out resistance values.Type: GrantFiled: August 24, 2004Date of Patent: March 18, 2008Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventors: Anthony R. Caringella, Donald Buytaert, Donald L. Van Erden

Patent number: 7021511Abstract: A fastener driving tool comprises a tool body, a muzzle extending forwardly from the tool body and being displaceable into a ready-to-fire position, a magazine for holding fasteners coupled to the muzzle, and a follower within the magazine that biases the fasteners. The follower has a blocking surface that blocks the muzzle during fastener-empty condition and prevents the muzzle from displacing into ready-to-fire position.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 2002Date of Patent: April 4, 2006Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventors: Michael S. Popovich, Anthony R. Caringella

Patent number: 6834788Abstract: A magazine for use with a fastener driving tool comprises a slider and a housing defining a chamber, a follower positioned in the chamber to bias fasteners arranged in a strip, and a longitudinal guide member within the magazine chamber to guide fasteners. The longitudinal guide member comprises two fingers that extend inwardly from the slider and prevent the fastener strip from skewing when inside the magazine chamber.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 2002Date of Patent: December 28, 2004Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventors: Michael S. Popovich, Anthony R. Caringella

Patent number: 6761299Abstract: A fastener driving tool has a tool body with an axis, a piston, a muzzle extending from tool body, and a magazine coupled to the muzzle. The fastener driving tool has an axial locking mechanism associated with a rotatable muzzle to releasably lock the muzzle and coupled magazine in at least one position. The axial locking mechanism comprises male members and female members with the male members biased axially into the female members.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 2002Date of Patent: July 13, 2004Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventors: Anthony R. Caringella, Michael S. Popovich

Patent number: 6688829Abstract: A fastener subassembly for being driven by a power actuated tool comprises a flute having a body and a pin having a tip for being driven into a substrate. The body of the flute has a longitudinal axis, a muzzle loading end, a mounting end, and a hollow bore. The pin is mounted in the bore with its tip proximate the mounting end, such that the tip is protected from pressure between the fastener subassembly and the substrate prior to driving. The mounting end of the flute has wings that extend radially outwardly. The wings allow the subassembly to be mounted in a hole in any suitable member that needs to be attached to a substrate while holding the pin substantially perpendicular to the substrate during driving.Type: GrantFiled: December 4, 2002Date of Patent: February 10, 2004Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventors: Michael S. Popovich, Anthony R. Caringella
