  • Patent number: 6132976
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for detecting cartilage degradation in a biological sample by identifying the presence of unwound type II collagen in the biological sample, said method comprising:contacting the biological sample with a monoclonal antibody which does not bind to native helical collagen but which does bind to an epitope on unwound type II collagen chains or fragments thereof, wherein said epitope has the following sequence (SEQ ID NO: 4):A-P(OH)-G-E-D-G-R-P(OH)-G-P-P(OH)-G-P; anddetecting the presence of the bound monoclonal antibody.

  • Patent number: 5700232
Abstract: An exercise apparatus comprises an elongate hollow post formed from three interconnectable tube sections. A carriage is mounted slidably to the post, and a pair of handlebars extend transversely from the carriage. A pair of footrests is arranged to be selectably mounted at either end of the post for providing support against movement of the carriage, and a plurality of resistance elements such as rubber bands extend between the carriage and an anchor formation within one of the tube sections. The rubber bands pass around a pulley formation at one end of the post, and selector means are provided on the carriage for allowing a preselected number of the elastic bands to be engaged for varying the overall resistance of the carriage as it is displaced along the post. In use, the footrests are pivotably mounted to a selected end of the post so as to allow the post to pivot freely in a vertical plane when supported on the footrests.

  • Patent number: 4089697
Abstract: A method of calcining solid materials on a downdraught travelling grate prior to treatment at a higher temperature on a continuously operating kiln, wherein heat for said calcining is obtained by drawings hot gaseous effluent from the kiln into the travelling grate through the solids discharge outlet thereof, characterized in that additional heat from an auxiliary source is induced into a downstream portion of the travelling grate.

Assignee: The Associated Portland Cement Manufacturers Limited
    Inventor: Anthony Robin Pennell
  • Patent number: 4081285
Abstract: Waste matter is incinerated in a combustion zone external to a rotary cement kiln. The resulting gaseous product is taken up in effluent gas from the cement making process in contact with calcareous material. At least some of the combustion zone bottom ash is combined in the eventual standard Portland cement by firing it in the kiln with the clinker-forming materials. The combustion zone can for instance be a fluidized bed combustor. The combustion zone can be a zone through which the clinker-forming materials pass at a temperature such that the waste matter ignites.

  • Patent number: 4080219
Abstract: A method of utilizing waste heat from a fuel-fired electrical power generation or steam raising plant, wherein flue gas from said plant is conducted through a heat exchange zone in contact with relatively cool wet material for making Portland cement.

  • Patent number: 4052148
Abstract: A process in which a substance undergoes endothermic change within a predetermined temperature range in at least one stage of the process and is subsequently subjected to a substantially higher temperature in a further stage of the process, characterised in that effluent heat from said further stage is augmented and the resultant supply of heat is applied partly to the generation of power, and partly to said endothermic change.

  • Patent number: 4037814
Abstract: A container support comprising a holder for removably holding an aerosol fire extinguisher container, a protective cap for protecting an actuating button and outlet nozzle of the container when held by the nozzle, complementary engagement means on the protective cap and holder for locating the cap in its operative position on the holder, and bias means on the cap and holder which is adapted to be triggered by withdrawal of the container from the holder to bias the cap and holder away from each other until sudden disengagement of the complementary engagement means results in the protective cap flipping off and away from the holder to expose the actuating button and nozzle for use.
