  • Publication number: 20150070826
Abstract: A portable electronic device is provided. The portable electronic device may include a housing and a cover panel that may cover a display. The cover panel may define a pre-bent configuration prior to being coupled to the housing. Thereby, the cover panel may be elastically bent during attachement to the housing. Thus, the cover panel may include internal forces as a result of the elastic bending that prevent the cover panel from bowing outwardly from the housing. Related assemblies and methods are also provided.

  • Patent number: 8976141
Abstract: Electronic devices may be provided that contain flexible displays that are bent to form displays on multiple surfaces of the devices. Bent flexible displays may be bent to form front side displays and edge displays. Edge displays may be separated from front side displays or from other edge displays using patterned housing members, printed or painted masks, or by selectively activating and inactivating display pixels associated with the flexible display. Edge displays may alternately function as virtual buttons, virtual switches, or informational displays that are supplemental to front side displays. Virtual buttons may include transparent button members, lenses, haptic feedback components, audio feedback components, or other components for providing feedback to a user when virtual buttons are activated.

  • Patent number: 8969730
Abstract: Printed circuits may be electrically and mechanically connected to each other using connections such as solder connections. A first printed circuit such as a rigid printed circuit board may have solder pads and other metal traces. A second printed circuit such as a flexible printed circuit may have openings. Solder connections may be formed in the openings to attach metal traces in the flexible printed circuit to the solder pads on the rigid printed circuit board. A ring of adhesive may surround the solder connections. The flexible printed circuit may be attached to the rigid printed circuit board using the ring of adhesive. An insulating tape may cover the solder connections. A conductive shielding layer with a conductive layer and a layer of conductive adhesive may overlap the solder joints. The conductive adhesive may connect the shielding layer to the metal traces on the rigid printed circuit board.

  • Patent number: 8804353
Abstract: A trim is provided which may be substantially concealed in an electronic device housing. Embodiments may be configured to distribute received forces away from internal components of an electronic device. Further some embodiments may be configured to align an electronic device housing with the internal plug receptacle for ease of assembly. Some embodiments may be configured to align a plug with the plug receptacle during plug attachment to ensure the correct attachment of the plug. Further embodiments may be made of a substantially rigid material to sustain repeated cycles plug insertion and removal. Additional embodiments may limit the ability for moisture to access the internal components of the electronic device. Certain embodiments may be interposed between a plug receptacle and an electronic device housing.

  • Publication number: 20140152632
Abstract: An electronic device is provided with a display and a solar cell ambient light sensor that receives light through a portion of the display. The solar cell ambient light sensor may include one or more thin-film photovoltaic cells. A voltage that accumulates within the thin-film photovoltaic cell in response to ambient light is sampled and converted into ambient light data. The device includes control circuitry that modifies the intensity of display light generated by the display based on the ambient light data from the photovoltaic cell. The solar cell ambient light sensor is attached to a transparent cover layer, a color filter layer, or any other layer of the display. When the accumulated voltage is not being sampled for ambient light measurements, the voltage may be used to provide charge to a battery in the device.

  • Publication number: 20140071634
Abstract: An electronic device may include subassemblies such as battery structures, electromagnetic shielding structures, and button structures. The electromagnetic shielding structures may include a conductive fence and a flexible shielding layer that covers electronic components. The electromagnetic shielding structure may be formed with a recess that receives a protruding portion of a battery. The recess may be formed from a multi-level shielding structure that includes rigid and flexible portions. The button structures may be mounted to a ledge that is formed as an integral part of a device housing. An electronic device battery may be enclosed in a protective battery sleeve. The battery sleeve may include a center portion that encloses the battery and peripheral portions that are folded and coupled to the center portion by adhesive material interposed between opposing surfaces of the folded peripheral portions and the center portion of the battery sleeve.

  • Publication number: 20140028902
Abstract: An electronic device may have a housing such as a metal housing. Openings may be formed in the housing to accommodate a button, to form a camera window, to form a microphone port, and to form a camera flash window. An input-output component mounting member may be used to mount input-output components to the housing of the electronic device. The input-output component mounting member may have a recess that mates with a corresponding protrusion on the housing. Screws may attach the input-output component mounting member to the housing. The protrusion and recess in the input-output component mounting member may ensure that the input-output component mounting member is accurately aligned with respect to the housing. Input-output components such as a microphone, button switch, camera, and camera flash may be mounted to the electronic device with the input-output component mounting member.
