  • Patent number: 4780518
Abstract: The present invention relates to a water-repellent polymeric carbohydrate composition, wherein a substantial number of the hydroxyl groups of the carbohydrate moieties are reacted with a metal/ammonium complex. The composition of this invention finds particular utility as an oil absorbent, and can also be utilized in other applications where a water-repellent cellulose is necessary, i.e., water-repellent insulation, water-repellent papers, etc.Additionally, this invention relates to a method for producing a water-repellent composition and to a method for utilizing the water-repellent composition as an oil-absorbent in applications where an oil-absorbency and a water-repellency is desirable.
