  • Patent number: 4562560
Abstract: Data are transmitted through a column of drilling mud in a drill string that is being used in drilling a borehole in an underground formation. The data are in the form of pressure waves (such as pressure pulses) and are generated by means of a downhole mud motor that is driven by the drilling mud. The pressure waves are generated by varying the load on the mud motor according to a predetermined pattern that is representative of the data to be transmitted.

  • Patent number: 4492276
Abstract: A down-hole drilling motor is provided with a bearing unit which supports the output shaft in such an inclined position relative to the motor housing, that the central axis of the output shaft intersects the longitudinal axis of the motor housing at a point of intersection located below the lower end of the housing.Directional drilling of a borehole is carried out by actuating a drill bit by means of the down-hole drilling motor, and simultaneously therewith rotating the drill string--and consequently also the motor housing--over periods that are preceded and succeeded by selected periods over which the drill string is not rotated.

  • Patent number: 4485879
Abstract: The invention relates to a downhole motor having a housing of which the resistance against bending in a predetermined longitudinal plane is smaller than in any other longitudinal plane. Directional drilling of boreholes is carried out by rotating the drill string simultaneously with the rotation of the drill bit driven by the downhole motor over periods preceded and followed by selected periods during which the drill string is not rotated simultaneously with the rotation of the drill bit driven by the downhole motor.

  • Patent number: 4465147
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and means for controlling the course of a bore hole during drilling thereof. The means comprises a down-hole motor and two eccentric stabilizers mounted on the housing of the down-hole motor near the ends thereof. Controlling the course of a bore hole that is being drilled with the down-hole motor driving the drill bit is done by successively not rotating the drill string and rotating the drill string.
