Patent number: 8171122Abstract: An apparatus and method provides visualization of IT resources that are exposed as WSDM resources. A management system with a console provides visibility and functionality for WSDM resources by employing a visualization mechanism that processes standardized visualization metadata that is sent from a WSDM resource. The visualization mechanism uses standardized information to enable the management system console to display a robust presentation of the resource without needing to update the management system and console code when new types of resources are added.Type: GrantFiled: June 22, 2007Date of Patent: May 1, 2012Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: John Elliott Arwe, Michael John Branson, David Arlen Elko, Anthony Wayne Erwin, Jeffrey Alan Frey, Steven Gene Halverson, Georg Ochs

Patent number: 8056018Abstract: Conflict resolution of web application keyboard shortcuts implementation includes a web application being loaded in a web browser and application keyboard shortcuts for the web application are registered with the web browser. The web browser identifies application keyboard shortcuts for the web application that conflict with keyboard shortcuts for the web browser. Then the web browser resolves each conflict.Type: GrantFiled: March 20, 2007Date of Patent: November 8, 2011Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Anthony Wayne Erwin, Timothy Charles Mossing, Christopher A. Patent number: 7987192Abstract: A first data model in which a large dataset is stored is maintained, wherein a first set of operations is allowed to be performed on the first data model. The first data model is reduced to a second data model that is of a smaller size than the first data model. Selected operations of the first set of operations are restricted from being performed on the second data model. A second set of operations is performed on the second data model, wherein the second set of operations is a subset of the first set of operations, and wherein the second set of operations does not include the selected operations that have been restricted from being performed on the second data model.Type: GrantFiled: June 25, 2008Date of Patent: July 26, 2011Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Randal Lee Bertram, Anthony Wayne Erwin, Steven Gene Halverson, Gregory Richard Hintermeister

Patent number: 7962861Abstract: In an embodiment, a sentence is created that describes a walk of a graph. The graph includes a set of nodes and a set of edges that are incident to the nodes. The sentence includes label words that describe the nodes and relationship words that describe the edges. The walk is an alternating sequence of a subset of the nodes and of the edges. Each of the edges in the walk is incident to two of the nodes that precede and follow the respective edge. The sentence is created by determining a parent node associated with a selected label word, determining the child nodes of the parent node, determining the edges that are incident to the parent nodes and the child nodes, determining relationship words that describe the edges that are incident to the parent nodes and the child nodes, and determining child label words that describe the child nodes. A selected relationship word and a selected child label word are then added to the sentence. In this way, a walk of the graph may be more easily understood.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 2006Date of Patent: June 14, 2011Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Anthony Wayne Erwin, Brian Owen Wood

Patent number: 7640457Abstract: An apparatus, program product and method provide a generic error reporting and diagnosis framework that is readily suited for use in a wide variety of distributed computing environments, and that supports the autonomic reporting, diagnosis, and potentially the remediation of errors. The framework supports the encapsulation of symptomatic data associated with an error in a component of a distributed computing environment such that the encapsulated symptomatic data may be routed to an error processing facility, typically irrespective of the underlying nature of the error and the hardware and/or software platform of the component that generated the error. The error processing facility is in turn capable of routing the encapsulated symptomatic data to one or more diagnostic agents that are capable of processing the symptomatic data to prescribe a treatment for the error.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 2006Date of Patent: December 29, 2009Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Anthony Wayne Erwin, Teresa Lynn Greene, Scott Douglas McCreadie, Andrew James Streit

Publication number: 20080316213Abstract: An apparatus and method are described for displaying a topological graph that allows a user to navigate through a history of previous topology displays to increase the user's understanding and awareness of the state of the topology. In a preferred embodiment, a topology display mechanism receives state changes to a topology of a computer network and stores a sequence of graphs that reflect the changes that are made to the topology. The topology display mechanism also allows the user to step through the sequence of stored topology graphs using “video” type controls to change the display of the topology graphs. In other embodiments, the topology display mechanism displays the changes in the topology as a sequence of graphs that form an animation to give the user a graphical visualization of the changes from one topology graph in the sequence to the next.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 2, 2008Publication date: December 25, 2008Applicant: INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATIONInventors: Stephen Troy Eagen, Anthony Wayne Erwin, Timothy Charles Mossing, Carl Clair Pecinovsky, Brian Owen Wood, Michael Vance

Publication number: 20080282150Abstract: A page is received, which includes elements. A tree represents the page. A subset of the elements are displayed. In response to selection of an important element, a subtree is created, which includes a path from a root element of the tree to the important element. A changed page is received, which is represented by a changed tree. A second path in the changed tree is found, where a leaf element of the second path is different from the important element in the first path, and where all other elements in the first path and the second path match. A message is displayed, which indicates that the important element was changed. In various embodiments, the message is presented in audio, magnified, or touch form. In this way, the user is notified of changes to the page that the user has selected as important.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 10, 2007Publication date: November 13, 2008Inventors: Anthony Wayne Erwin, Timothy Charles Mossing, Christopher A.
