  • Publication number: 20130345035
Abstract: A roller for use in paper machines includes a roller core, a roller covering surrounding the roller core, and at least one optical waveguide having a plurality of fiber Bragg gratings. The at least one optical waveguide is either arranged between the roller core and the roller covering or is embedded in the roller covering. Sections of the at least one optical waveguide which each contain a fiber Bragg grating alternate with sections of the at least one optical waveguide which are free of fiber Bragg gratings in the longitudinal direction of the optical waveguide. Sections of the at least one optical waveguide which each contain a fiber Bragg grating also enclose an angle with a circumferential direction to the roller of less than 80°, for example less than 60°, or less than 45°.

  • Patent number: 8496785
Abstract: A combination of a press felt with a pressure and/or suction roll covering for a papermaking machine, including a porous press felt with a carrier structure. The pressure or suction roll covering having a circumferential groove surface structure having a groove width in the range of 0.5 mm to 1.5 mm, a distance between grooves in the range of 1.5 to 2.5 mm and a groove depth in the range of 1.5 mm to 4 mm. A percentage of an open surface relative to an overall surface of the pressure roll covering is in a range of 20% to 50%. The suction roll covering additionally having an arrangement of holes with a plurality of suction holes completely penetrating through the suction roll covering, whereby a percentage of an open surface in relation to an overall surface of the suction roll covering is in a range of 30% to 50%.

  • Patent number: 8474333
Abstract: An industrial roll is provided, comprising a transverse force transducing fiber Bragg sensor that is embedded in the roll cover and/or located in-between the roll cover and the roll core of the industrial roll. The transverse force transducing fiber Bragg sensor comprises a fiber optical waveguide having a fiber core and a fiber cladding, and a stud element being nonpositively joined to a partial area of the circumferential surface of the fiber optical waveguide. The fiber optical waveguide comprises a Bragg grating located in the fiber core, whereby the dimension of the partial area in the longitudinal direction of the fiber is longer than a grating spacing of the Bragg grating. The partial area is located at a section of the fiber optical waveguide housing the Bragg grating, and at least a first component of the stud element is formed from a first material having a Young's modulus of less than 10 kN/mm2.
