  • Patent number: 4537941
Abstract: An improved modified phenol-formaldehyde resin, and a process for its preparation, which contains lignosulfonates is described. Typically, the lignosulfonates are in the form of black liquor. These resins are made by including with the phenol a small amount of potassium ferricyanide. Unlike the known processes utilizing black liquors and the like, this process appears to be far less susceptible to the inherent variability of these liquors. These resins can be easily converted into a solid by spray drying, and find use as adhesives, for example in board products.

  • Patent number: 4417004
Abstract: A two-part pack, and method for its preparation, from which a phenol-formaldehyde resin foam may be prepared, which system comprises in the first part of the pack a phenol-formaldehyde resin, a blowing agent which is an inert, low boiling liquid, an effective amount of a nitrogenous modifier capable of permitting dispersion of the blowing agent in the resin, and a surfactant; and in the second part of the pack an acid catalyst system dispersed in a liquid polyhydroxy compound, in a weight ratio of polyhydroxy compound to acid catalyst of at least 1:1. These two-part packs enable simpler handling and placement techniques being shelf storable, compared to the known shelf storable systems which involve three, or more, components.

  • Patent number: 4324747
Abstract: Modified phenol-formaldehyde resins, and processes for their preparation, are described wherein board or paper pulping process waste liquor is used as the modifier. The resins may contain, based on solids contents of both resin and waste liquor, from 1:10 to 10:1 parts by weight. These resins are cheaper than conventional resins and also use the waste-liquor without any purification step.

  • Patent number: 4098770
Abstract: A method of preparing a modified phenol-formaldehyde resin in solid particulate form comprising reacting together, in an aqueous medium, phenol and formaldehyde, in a ratio of 1.0 mole phenol to between 1.8 and 3.5 moles of formaldehyde, in the presence of between 0.1 and 1.0 moles of a basic catalyst; continuing this reaction until a desired viscosity is reached; modifying the reaction system by adding thereto between 0 and 30%, based on the weight of phenol originally taken of a non-phenolic polyhydroxy compound; spray drying the thus modified liquid resin in a pressure nozzle drier, and chilling the spray dried particulate solid. These solid resins are redispersible in water and stable on storage, compared to the known aqueous, equivalent, systems.
