  • Patent number: 4311762
Abstract: Low hardness and scratch resistance in direct-cast diethylene glycol bis(allyl carbonate) (CR-39.RTM. plastic surface laminae in glass-plastic lenses are analyzed and new plastic formulations, preferably comprising the monomer catalyzed with a mixed isopropyl percarbonate-benzoyl peroxide polymerization catalyst, are disclosed, offering improved hardness and scratch resistance for laminated lenses and also for CR-39.RTM. plastic articles generally.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: October 24, 1980
Date of Patent: January 19, 1982
    Assignee: Corning Glass Works
Inventors: Anton A. Spycher, Dennis J. Damico
  • Patent number: 4287018
Abstract: A method and apparatus for edge-grinding stressed laminated glass-plastic lens blanks wherein the lens blanks are heated during the abrasive edging process to reduce thermal stress breakage. The edged lenses are optionally etched to remove glass flaws, thus providing laminated lenses exhibiting improved resistance to thermal stress breakage in use.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 7, 1979
Date of Patent: September 1, 1981
    Assignee: Corning Glass Works
Inventors: Suresh T. Gulati, Anton A. Spycher
  • Patent number: 4268134
Abstract: A photochromic glass/plastic laminated lens of improved physical durability comprising a buried layer of photochromic glass, surface layers of optically clear plastic, and adhesive bonding layers of high strength but low elastic modulus between the buried glass and plastic surface layers, is described.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: March 7, 1979
Date of Patent: May 19, 1981
    Assignee: Corning Glass Works
Inventors: Suresh T. Gulati, Norman A. Smith, Anton A. Spycher
  • Patent number: 4264156
Abstract: A glass-plastic laminated lens blank, and a molding assembly for providing such a blank by direct casting, are described, wherein the incidence of blank shaling fracture is reduced by an edge configuration which transfers the high bond stress present in the laminate from the flawed edge of the glass core to a point in the core interior which is flaw-free.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 7, 1979
Date of Patent: April 28, 1981
    Assignee: Corning Glass Works
    Inventor: Anton A. Spycher
  • Patent number: 4246207
Abstract: A process for producing laminated glass-plastic lenses utilizing optically finished glass-ceramic mold components having specified thermal expansion, strength and thermal conductivity characteristics in a direct casting procedure wherein the lenses are cooled in the molds after curing to provide high selections of physically durable lenses.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: May 14, 1979
Date of Patent: January 20, 1981
    Assignee: Corning Glass Works
    Inventor: Anton A. Spycher
  • Patent number: 4227950
Abstract: A glass-plastic composite lens combining a glass element with a high-shrinkage thermosetting plastic is provided in accordance with a direct casting process comprising a consolidation heating step, subsequent to plastic curing and shrinkage, during which a thermoplastic coating between the glass element and the cured plastic bonds the assembly into a unitary low-stress composite.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: April 5, 1979
Date of Patent: October 14, 1980
    Assignee: Corning Glass Works
