  • Patent number: 6945311
Abstract: In a method for vertical continuous casting of a steel band, a strand (11) of a parallelogram-like cross section is cast at first in a revolving chill-mold (2) and is thereafter transferred from said initial cross section with completely solidified longitudinal edges (10) and liquid core into a band (1) with plane-parallel cross section, this occurring in such a way that an already solidified shell (9) of the strand (11) which becomes increasingly thicker by cooling is increasingly compressed in the casting direction in a forming device (4) without upsetting deformation of the completely solidified longitudinal edges (10). In order to provide advantageous conditions it is proposed that after the compression into a band (1) the strand (11) with a still liquid core (16) is guided during the complete solidification of the core merely in a forming gap with a constant width corresponding to the thickness of the completely solidified longitudinal edges (10) and is calibrated in this process.

  • Patent number: 6250109
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for continuously producing a glassy or vitrified blast furnace slag, in which the slag is applied onto a cooling roll or onto articulately interlinked cooling plates conducted as an endless conveyor belt over deflection pulleys and wherein cooling of the slag is effected dry, wherein the liquid slag is supplied to an intermediate storage and from that intermediate storage is continuously applied onto the cooling plate belt, or cooling roll, via a distributing channel in parallel strands at temperatures of above 1350° C., whereupon the cooled slag is thrown off and comminuted or granulated dry in a crusher. The invention, furthermore, relates to an arrangement for carrying out the process.

  • Patent number: 5899260
Abstract: The mold comprises two crawler chains rotating in opposite directions and having facing chain strands, the chain strands comprising chain elements having complementary shells defining an ingot mold cavity of round cross-section therebetween. The complementary shells have intermeshing longitudinal edges movable transversely to the direction of rotation relative to each other, and the complementary shells are guided to reduce the round cross-section of successive ones of the mold cavities while being subjected to a compressive stress.

  • Patent number: 4978107
Abstract: To permit a continuous production of foamed blast furnace slag, a revolving conveyor is provided, which is continuously supplied with a stream of slag from a slag feeder in a trough which comprises a bottom and side walls rising from the bottom. Adjacent to the slag feeder, stationary tubular lances extend in said trough closely above the bottom in the direction of conveyance and are formed in a predetermined length portion with radial outlet orifices for a discharge of water into said trough.

  • Patent number: 4953615
Abstract: In a process for the continuous casting of steel, molten steel is vertically cast in mold means to form a strand having an elongate shape in cross-section and is caused to solidify as it flows through the mold means. To permit a thin strand to be efficiently produced, the strand is first cooled while a constant cross-section is maintained, that cooling is continued until a strong shell which has entirely been solidified at least in the narrow side walls has been formed, and the cooling and solidification of the strand are subsequently continued while the strand is progressively deformed and compacted to form a flat preliminary strip.

  • Patent number: 4682646
Abstract: A continuous casting mold for selectively casting strands of different widths and thicknesses includes two first plate-shaped side walls arranged opposite each other and defining a mold cavity at two opposite sides, each of the two first side walls having a recess at one side edge, two second side walls each arranged so as to be sunk in one of said recesses at an angle to said first side walls, the second side walls having front surfaces pressable against the first side walls so as to form a peripherally closed mold cavity. The first side walls may be subdivided into several parts assembled in the manner of a circulating continuous chain, each chain being guided over an upper and a lower deflection pulley. In a method for operating a continuous casting mold of the above-defined kind, the adjustment force relative the strand is measured during casting, and a lower deflection pulley is adjusted to the oppositely arranged lower deflection pulley until the two oppositely arranged strand shells contact each other.

  • Patent number: 4615677
Abstract: An arrangement for recovering the sensible heat of dumpable hot stock includes a continuous conveying belt guided about at least two deflection pulleys and formed by articulately connected plates. The carrying run of the conveying belt with the hot stock applied thereon and the empty lower run each are guided through a cooling zone. In order to recover the sensible heat from the hot stock to an extent as large as possible and with a high efficiency, without having to use a bed covering material, the plates of the conveying belt are designed to include at least two layers, an outwardly carrier layer receiving the hot stock and an inwardly arranged insulation layer.

  • Patent number: 4534405
Abstract: There is disclosed a method and arrangement for inspecting the surface of steel stock having a temperature above the Curie point. In order to detect, with a great certainty and accuracy, defects in the hot steel stock, with a loss of energy for cooling the steel stock for inspection and subsequently reheating it for further processing being avoided, only a thin surface layer of the steel stock is intensively cooled on the surface to be inspected, to a temperature below the Curie point. The core of the steel remains hot. Immediately thereafter, a magnetic or electromagnetic field is induced in the cooled surface layer and disturbances in the induced field caused by defects in the steel stock are detected and recorded by pick-ups.

  • Patent number: 3995870
Abstract: Pre-shaped wrought-iron rods are placed one beside another in a lattice array, in which node-forming portions of adjacent rods are disclosed close to each other at a plurality of node positions. All node-forming portions at each of said node positions are inserted into a U-shaped strip metal element having an inwardly protruding longitudinal rib. Each of said strip metal elements is joined to said node-forming portions inserted therein by a projection welding operation in which said rib is used as a projection. Each of said strip metal elements is subsequently closed to form a closed clip embracing said node-forming portions joined thereto.
