    Abstract: A synthetic mucin formed by performing a ring-opening polymerization of carbohydrate N-carboxyanhydride (NCA) followed by deprotection of at least one protecting group from the carbohydrate. The resulting synthetic mucin can be produced in large quantities and obviates many of the problems associated with using natural mucins obtained from biological sources.
