  • Patent number: 9390835
Abstract: A composite coating includes a first layer, a second layer, and a fluoropolymer film disposed on the second layer. The first layer includes a polymer matrix with mica particles dispersed throughout, while the second layer includes a polyether ether ketone (PEEK).
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 19, 2013
Date of Patent: July 12, 2016
    Assignee: Tyco Electronics UK Ltd.
    Inventors: Antonio Pagliuca, Philip Hammond
  • Patent number: 9208925
Abstract: A wire or cable comprises a core (10) and a sheath including a wrapped film (16) of polyetherether ketone (PEEK) and a flameproofing layer (14) comprising mica particles dispersed in a polymer matrix such as a silicone. An outer coating (18) of PEEK or another polymer may be provided, which may be sintered to provide a tough outer protective covering. The PEEK and mica layers combine synergistically to provide a sheath of increased flame resistance as well as high flexibility and resistance to mechanical stresses, while being of reduced weight and diameter.

  • Patent number: 9099225
Abstract: Primary wire for marine or undersea cable comprises a conducting core (10), typically a multifilament core of copper, and an insulating sheath comprising an insulating inner layer (12) having a thickness of 0.35 to 1.0 mm, preferably 0.5 to 0.75 mm, and an outer protective layer (14) of polyvinylidene fluoride having a thickness of 0.15 to 0.3 mm, at least the outer layer being radiation crosslinked. The inner and outer layers are preferably crosslinked together using electron beam radiation. The combination of the inner and outer layers of the sheath enables marine and subsea cables and the like to be made with smaller diameters, without loss of capacity or electrical properties and with an increase in overall performance such as temperature range and mechanical properties.

  • Publication number: 20130062097
Abstract: A composite insulating tape (20) comprises a laminate or co-extrusion of at least two layers, including an insulating first layer (24) of a polymer matrix in which mica particles are dispersed and a second layer (26) of a polymer containing aromatic and/or heterocyclic rings and having a melting point of at least 350° C. and a glass transition temperature of at least 150° C. The tape can be used to form a multilayer coating on a conductor (10) such as an electric wire. An outer protective layer (28) of a fluoropolymer such as PTFE may be applied around the wrapped tape, by wrapping or extrusion.

  • Publication number: 20120090874
Abstract: A thin, lightweight insulated wire comprises a core (10) with an insulating polymeric sheath comprising an inner layer (12) of polytetrafluroethylene (PTFE) to empower electrical insulation, a middle layer (14) of an aromatic and/or heterocyclic ring-containing polymer such as polyetheretherketone(PEEK) to provide enhanced mechanical properties such as abrasion and cut-through resistance and an outer layer (16) of PTFE which provides electrical and chemical resistance and allows the whole construction to be sintered. The middle layer may undergo some flow and alloying during sintering, which may provide additional and unexpected benefits. The preferred thickness of each film is 25 to 50 ?m. The use of such thin films allows for a compact, thin and lightweight insulation to be produced.
