  • Patent number: 7616293
Abstract: A system of lasers and detectors to detect the presence of objects and determine their speed is disclosed. The system comprises of a pair of lasers and a pair of detectors focused through a single lens or a pair of lenses. An electronic board that accompanies the lasers and detectors is used to provide the logic and decision making mechanism. Data collected and processed by the system yields such information as whether an object is present, whether the object is stationary or is moving, and subsequent speed information. The described system is also capable of providing additional information concerning the characteristics of the moving object such as its profile and length, and indication of a traffic violation.

Date of Patent: November 10, 2009
    Assignee: Sigma Space Corporation
Inventors: J. Marcos Sirota, Antonios Seas, Christopher Field, Marzouk Marzouk
  • Patent number: 7495579
Abstract: A Traffic-Light Status Remote Sensor System is disclosed. The basic system consists of a set of lenses, detectors, and narrowband filters. The sensor system is capable of determining the status of a traffic light (red, amber, or green) from a distance, without any connection to the electronic boards controlling the traffic light. A portable red-light photo-enforcement system working independently from the traffic light controllers is a potential application of the remote traffic light sensor.

  • Patent number: 7471447
Abstract: A device and method for reducing amplified Rayleigh backscatter at a Raman pump. A pump assembly for an optical amplifier includes a set of pump radiation sources for Raman pumping an optical transmission span. Each pump radiation source is adapted to produce radiation having a pump wavelength and a pump power. The optical transmission span is adapted to provide Raman amplification of an optical data signal when pumped by the set of pump radiation sources. At least one optical isolator is selectively located between at least one selected pump radiation source and the optical transmission span to reduce amplified Rayleigh backscatter at the pump wavelength of the selected pump radiation source from feeding back into the selected at least one pump radiation source.

  • Patent number: 7323987
Abstract: A compact system for determining the presence and speed of an object/vehicle, and its application for Red Light Camera photo-enforcement is disclosed. The disclosed system uses accurate timing, laser radiation in the form of optical pulses, and the scattering effect of optical pulses from the road or vehicle surface to determine the presence of a vehicle, and estimate its speed. The system can determine whether an object/vehicle is present at a specific location, estimate its height, and in the case that the object/vehicle is moving, the system can estimate its speed. Combining the disclosed technology with commercially available digital recording techniques and equipment, a traffic photo-enforcement system can be constructed. The system is capable of monitoring traffic in an intersection/highway, measure vehicle speed, identify potential traffic violations, and trigger a visual recording device such as a camera or video system for documenting a violation.
