  • Patent number: 4946676
Abstract: The invention relates to a new vaccine comprising a native protein capable of inducing the production of protective antibodies in a host, together with an adjuvant amount of certain proteins or peptides which, as such, are not capable of inducing substantial protective antibody titres but considerably enhance the immunizing activity of said native protein. The amino acid sequences of the adjuvant proteins and peptides show homology with the native proteins. Combination of inactivated picornavirus, such as poliovirus, with adjuvant amounts of denatured picornavirus, such as poliovirus, capsis proteins, in a vaccine, is highly advantageous.

  • Patent number: 4900549
Abstract: The invention relates to a process for preparing immunogenic complexes in which an amphiphatic antigenic protein or peptide in dissolved or solubilized form is contacted with a solution containing a detergent, a sterol, and a glycoside comprising hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions, in at least the critical micelle forming concentration, the detergent is removed, and the immunogenic complex formed is purified. Optionally, the solution with which the antigenic protein or peptide is contacted also contains a phospholipid, preferably phosphatidylethanolamine. The preferred sterol is cholesterol, and preferred glycosides are saponins, espeically Quil A.The immunogenic complex is useful as a vaccine. Its immunogenic power is higher than that of corresponding micelles formed by aggregation of the antigens, and is also higher than that of the antigens incorporated in liposomes.

  • Patent number: 4888294
Abstract: Cultivation tank (1) for continuous cultivation of cells or micro-organisms, containing a rotating separating device (11,12) for separating suspended cells from cultivation liquid (10) supplied continuously through a supply (4) and passed through the separating device (11,12) from the outside to the inside, cell free liquid being continuously discharged from within the separating device (11,12), the rotating parts (11,12) of the separating device being formed so that within the outer circumference a zone (15) is formed of a vortex-free, vertical rotating column of cultivation liquid from which the cells are radially thrown out by centrifugal forces into the surrounding liquid (10) through openings in the outlet circumference (11) of the separating device (11,12) are considerably greater than the size of the cells.

  • Patent number: 4508708
Abstract: The invention relates to virus vaccines and to a process for the preparation thereof especially to polio virus vaccines and other picorna virus vaccines, such as foot-and-mouth disease vaccine. The invention provides vaccines which are stabilized and show an improved activity by the addition of compounds of formula I of the formula sheet, in which R.sub.1 en R.sub.2 each represent an alkyl- or alkoxy group of not more than 6 carbon atoms, preferably not more than 4 carbon atoms,A represents a bivalent hydrocarbon radical of 3-12 carbon atoms,R.sub.3 represents an unsubstituted or substituted phenyl radical and n is 1 or 0.
