    Abstract: A system for enabling the insertion and removal of an embolic protection device, for capturing and retaining embolic debris which may be created during the performance of a therapeutic interventional procedure in a stenosed or occluded region of a blood vessel. The system, in an embodiment thereof, enables the device to be snap-fitted so as to engage the distal end of a guide wire, to be pre-formed for expansion thereof so as to seal off the inner surface of a blood vessel, to inhibit the forming of a gap therein, for inhibiting embolic material from passing therethrough, and to be foreshortened to enable insertion thereof through confined spaces. The system, in another embodiment thereof, enables expandable material to be formed into an expandable configuration of an embolic protection device for capturing embolic material, which is capable of sealing off the inner surface of the blood vessel.

    Abstract: Stent designs for use in peripheral vessels, such as the carotid arteries, are disclosed. The stents consist of a plurality of radially expandable cylindrical elements generally aligned on a common longitudinal stent axis and interconnected by one or more interconnecting members placed so that the stent is flexible in a longitudinal direction. The cylindrical elements are generally serpentine wave pattern transverse to the longitudinal axis between alternating valley portion and peak portions, the valley portion including alternating double-curved portions and U-shaped portions. The interconnecting members are attached to the double-curved portions to connect a cylindrical element to an adjacent cylindrical element and interconnecting members are attached to the U-shaped portions to connect the cylindrical element to the other adjacent cylindrical element. The designs include an eight crown and six crown stent which exhibit flexibility and sufficient radial strength to support the vessel.

The harness can be constructed of a plurality of individual modules assembled ex vivo or in vivo. The modules can have different physical characteristics, such as having different compliance, and may or may not include spring hinges. Portions of a cardiac harness can be connected to each other using a coupling mechanism such as, for example, a zip coupler.

    Abstract: A self-expanding basket for use in conjunction with an embolic filtering device has a proximal set of struts which are connected to a distal set of struts by a bending region which provides enhanced bending characteristics to the basket. The bending region can be formed by intermediate links which are extremely flexible and bendable to allow the basket to be delivered through tortuous anatomy. The intermediate links are extremely flexible and create a mechanical hinge-like connection between the proximal and distal strut assemblies. The basket thus is capable of substantial bending when being delivered through the patient's vasculature and will bend and conform to the patient's anatomy once positioned for filtering purposes. The intermediate links can also lengthen, when needed, when positioned in a curved vessel in the patient's vasculature, when needed.

    Abstract: A system used in a blood vessel when an interventional procedure is being performed in a stenosed or occluded region to capture any embolic material which may be created and released into the bloodstream during the procedure. The system includes filtering elements which are capable of occluding a blood vessel distal to an interventional procedure site, while enabling the blood to flow past the occlusion and filtering the blood to capture embolic material which may be released into the blood during a therapeutic interventional procedure. The filtering elements include an expandable member which is capable of being expanded distal to the area of treatment at the interventional procedure site for occluding the blood vessel and for enabling the blood to pass therethrough while preventing emboli from passing therethrough.
