  • Patent number: 9848026
Abstract: An interface circuit in a computing device may communicate with user-interface devices using shared slots during time intervals. In particular, the computing device may transmit outgoing messages to the user-interface devices at a first predefined time during sequential time intervals when the user-interface devices transition from a sleep mode to a normal mode. In response, the computing device may receive incoming messages from one or more of the user-interface devices at a second predefined time following the first predefined time during the sequential time intervals. Then, the computing device may transmit a multicast message to the user-interface devices at a third predefined time during the sequential time intervals. In response to the given multicast message, one of the user-interface devices may communicate data to the computing device. Note that, in some instances, a multicast time slot may instead be used to communicate data to one of the user-interface devices.

  • Patent number: 9832788
Abstract: Mechanisms for operating a wireless user equipment device, to determine the state of data scheduling activity. Such activity state (and other information such as measurements of signal interference and/or channel condition) may be used to dynamically control the selection of a high-power high-performance receiver vs. a low-power basic receiver. A first mechanism involves transitioning to a high activity state and starting a timer upon each occurrence of scheduled subframe. A transition to the low activity state occurs whenever the timer expires. A second mechanism involves filtering a sequence of binary-valued indicators corresponding respectively to a sequence of time intervals. Each indicator indicates whether a subframe is scheduled during the corresponding time interval. The filter output is compared to a threshold to determine high/low activity state.

  • Patent number: 9820239
Abstract: Power allocation for encoded bits in OFDM systems. OFDM symbol subcarriers may be allocated to a wireless user equipment (UE) device by a base station. A first portion of the allocated subcarriers may include systematic bits and a second portion of the allocated subcarriers may include parity bits according to a coding scheme. Transmit power may be unevenly allocated to the subcarriers allocated to the UE, such that subcarriers including systematic bits are allocated different power than the subcarriers including parity bits. The OFDM symbols including the subcarriers allocated to the UE may be transmitted to the UE by the base station according to the allocated power distribution.

  • Patent number: 9807651
Abstract: A user equipment (UE) operating in a communication system comprising a base station and one or more UEs. The UE may be configured to operate on or “camp” on two different networks with one radio. In this exemplary system, the radio may be normally connected to the first network (NW1) and may from time to time be “tuned away” from NW1 to a second network (NW2). The UE may inform NW1 that it has tuned away to another network, e.g., using start and end indicators. This information may prevent NW1 from wasting downlink capacity by unnecessarily allocating downlink resources to the UE during the tune-away. Alternatively, or in addition, this information may prevent NW1 from penalizing the UE, e.g., by reducing its future downlink allocations, since the UE does not respond to NW1 commands during the tune-away.

  • Patent number: 9794885
Abstract: Providing a power-saving mode for control channel monitoring in discontinuous reception (DRX) scenarios. Upon waking from a sleep mode at the conclusion of a DRX off period, a baseband modem may transition to a low-power mode configured to receive and decode only a control channel, such as a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH). If the control channel indicates during a DRX on period that communication traffic will be transmitted to the baseband modem, then the baseband modem may transition to a full-power mode to receive the communication traffic. Otherwise, the baseband modem may transition back to the sleep mode. The low-power mode may be implemented by a dedicated set of hardware configured to draw less power than a full set of hardware configured to implement the high-power mode.

  • Patent number: 9768825
Abstract: Wireless communication devices (UEs) may include multiple receive (RX) chains and associated antennas, and at least one transmit (TX) chain co-located with one of the RX chains. The UE may track instant fading of the antenna gain(s) during reception of packets from an associated access point (AP) device to which the UE intends to transmit packets. The UE may also track long term antenna gain(s), using any packets received at the multiple RX chains within the UE. At a switching occasion, a decision is made by the UE whether to switch antennas. If the instant fading detection is based on packets received no later than a specified time period prior to the switching occasion, then the UE may make the switching decision based on the results of the instant fading tracking. Otherwise, the UE may make the switching decision based on the results of the long term antenna gain tracking.

  • Patent number: 9763185
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for adaptively adjusting receiver operation for e.g., power optimization. In one embodiment, operation during diversity operation is adaptively adjusted. Diversity techniques consume significantly more power than non-diversity operation. However, the performance gain from receiver diversity is not always predictable. Consequently, in one embodiment, a device evaluates the overall performance gain contributed by diversity operation and, where the performance gain is insignificant or inadequate, the device disables diversity operation. In one implementation, the device can operate in a static single antenna mode, a dynamic single antenna mode and a dynamic multiple antenna mode.

  • Publication number: 20170251372
Abstract: A wireless communication device may conduct first wireless communications over a first frequency band according to a first radio access technology (RAT), and may detect second wireless communications conducted over the first frequency band according to a second RAT while the wireless communication device is conducting the first wireless communications. The wireless communication device may then adjust characteristics and/or parameters associated with the first wireless communications based on the detected second wireless communications. In a specific example, a wireless communication device conducting Wi-Fi communications in the 5 GHz band may detect cellular communications (e.g. LAA/LTE-U communications) also conducted in the 5 GHz band while the wireless communication device is conducting the Wi Fi communications.
