  • Patent number: 9355410
Abstract: Methods and apparatus for generating a message (106) for a wireless device (102) are disclosed. In an embodiment, an application server (106), or any other suitable device or system, receives a wireless network identifier (e.g. an SSID) associated with an access point (202) communicatively coupled to the wireless device (102). The application server (106) determines a social networking account associated with the network identifier (e.g., company XYZ's Facebook account from a local database). The application server (106) then retrieves content from a network (110) based on the social networking account (e.g., company XYZ's ten most recent Facebook posts), and generates the message (106) for the wireless device (102) based on the content (e.g., “Welcome to XYZ! Today's special offer is . . . ”).

  • Publication number: 20160142963
Abstract: A mobile device performs method for routing traffic of applications installed on the mobile device. The method includes receiving, from a source external to the mobile device, a set of attributes for a first application installed on the mobile device. The method further includes receiving, from a network element, a set of application traffic routing rules. Additionally, the method includes selecting, under the control of at least one application traffic routing rule of the received set of application traffic routing rules, a network access from multiple network accesses of the mobile device for routing traffic of the first application. The selecting is based on the set of attributes for the first application.

  • Patent number: 9326208
Abstract: A wireless communication device performs a method for determining when to trigger a handover of a communication session from a first access network to a second access network. The method includes determining, for an active communication session, a set of outgoing traffic statistics for outgoing traffic sent by the wireless communication device using the first access network and determining, for the active communication session, a set of incoming traffic statistics for incoming traffic received by the wireless communication device using the first access network. The method further includes analyzing the incoming and outgoing traffic statistics and determining when to trigger a handover of the active communication session from the first access network to the second access network based on the analysis of the incoming and outgoing traffic statistics.

  • Patent number: 9326132
Abstract: In a wireless communication device having a first and a second radio access interface for respectively communicating with a first and a second access network, a method for retrieving content comprises receiving a request for retrieval of content from a remote server and retrieving a first part of the requested content over a first radio access technology connection. When the retrieval of the first part is determined not to meet a required QoS threshold, the second radio access interface is activated. A next part of the requested content to be retrieved is divided into a first portion for retrieval over the first radio access technology connection and a second portion for retrieval over a second radio access technology connection such that retrieval of the first and second portions are estimated to meet the required QoS threshold, and are retrieved over the first and second radio access technology connections, respectively.

  • Patent number: 9319434
Abstract: A method (500) of indicating a process to be implemented in support of a mobility transfer operation and a method (600) of responding to a mobility transfer operation being initiated. A session initiation protocol (SIP) request (120, 124, 128, 220, 226, 228) can be generated. The SIP request can indicate a mobility transfer type that corresponds to the mobility transfer operation. The SIP request can be sent from a first device (102, 106) participating in the mobility transfer operation to at least a second device (106, 102) participating in the mobility transfer operation.

  • Publication number: 20160021540
Abstract: A method and apparatus are for automatically accessing a social network account that provides member information about each of a plurality of social network members. The member information about at least one of the social network members, denoted as a particular member, includes a network detection portion and a security portion. The network detection portion is retrieved from the social network for at least the particular member. A detection is made that the wireless device is within range of a secure wireless network associated with the particular member. The detection uses the network detection portion of the particular member as an input. The security portion of the member information of the particular member is retrieved from the social network. The security portion is used to derive access credentials for the secure wireless network. The derived access credentials are used to securely access the secure wireless network.

  • Publication number: 20160007238
Abstract: The disclosure is directed to a method carried out on a wireless device capable of communicating over a first radio-access network (“RAN”) using a first radio-access technology (“RAT”) and over a second RAN using a second RAT. According to various implementations, the device proxies a data communication session between an application executing on the device and a remote host over the first RAN, requests data content from the remote host during the session, transfers the session from the first RAN to a second RAN based on the amount of the data content that remains to be received from the remote host during the session and based on a radio-access condition of the first RAN or of the second RAN.

  • Patent number: 9232465
Abstract: A method is performed in a mobile device for selecting or excluding an access point for use in wirelessly connecting to a network. The method includes collecting historical connection data for a first access point, wherein the historical connection data identifies a plurality of previous wireless connections to the network using the first access point and identifies a corresponding duration of each previous wireless connection. The method further includes: detecting that the first access point is available for a current wireless connection to the network; calculating an expected connection duration for the first access point using the historical connection data; and determining whether to select or exclude the first access point as a candidate for the current wireless connection based on the expected connection duration calculated for the first access point.

Abstract: A mobile device performs a method for policy-based routing. The method includes creating a first set of marking rules based on routing policy data provisioned in the mobile device, wherein each marking rule indicates labeling for packets, wherein the labeling is used in selecting one of a plurality of active network interfaces in the mobile device to route the packets over a set of access networks available to the mobile device. The method further includes creating a first set of routing tables corresponding to the labeling indicated by the first set of marking rules, wherein each routing table directs the mobile device to a different one of the active network interfaces of the plurality of active network interfaces.
