  • Patent number: 5047006
Abstract: A personal integrating sphere system that provides a field of illumination of substantially uniform intensity for beneficially affecting the mental and physical health of a user. The system includes an integrating sphere configured to permit the user to experience the field of illumination of substantially uniform intensity. The integrating sphere integrates illuminating light injected thereinto to provide uniform illumination within the sphere. The system also includes an illuminator that may be controlled by the user to provide illuminating light sequences of variegated hues and mixtures thereof, saturation, brightness and duration. A sound system may be used in combination with the integrating sphere system to enhance the effect of the illuminating light sequences.

  • Patent number: 4799784
Abstract: An instrument and technique is disclosed for locating the exit point of the visual axis at the corneal surface. Several methods are described. One includes an optical device movable on the corneal surface and being partially reflective and transparent to incident light. A collimated light beam is directed along the axis through the device onto the retina of a patient's eye, and a viewing means is provided for observing a light beam reflected from the device along the incident axis when the eye fixates on the collimated beam. The invention can also be implemented for direct visualization without the optical device, by off-axis viewing of scattered light produced by the incident collimated beam impinging on the corneal tissue, or by viewing fluorescent radiation from the point of intersection of the incident beam produced by a fluorescent dye applied to the cornea.

  • Patent number: 4641349
Abstract: Methods and apparatus are disclosed for identifying an eye, especially a human eye, on the basis of the visible features of the iris and pupil. The eye is first illuminated until the pupil reaches a predetermined size, at which an image of the iris and pupil is obtained. This image is then compared with stored image information for identification. The stored image information is previously obtained from an eye, the pupil of which was similarly brought to the same predetermined size. The illumination of the iris may include oblique illumination from several positions around the circumference of the iris. The illumination from each position may be relatively monochromatic, so that the resulting shadow will lack the color of the light source at that position, providing better contrast for elevation-depednent features. A system for performing iris recognition may include a processor which controls an illumination control circuit and a camera to obtain images at several predetermined sizes of the pupil.
