Patent number: 8289206Abstract: Reliable and efficient search windows are provided by allowing the adaptation of the code search window to be dependent on inaccuracy measures of relations between a cellular frame time and a satellite reference time. This inaccuracy is calculated in a positioning node (21) of the cellular communications system (1), preferably by filtering of measurements received from user equipments. Linear trend Kalman filtering followed by post processing of estimation errors is presently preferred. In order to ensure non-ambiguous interpretation of the received time stamps of received satellite signals (55) provided by user equipments (10), a pseudo propagation delay is computed in both the user equipment (10) and the positioning node (21) based on GPS acquisition assistance data. The GPS time stamp is then defined referring to the determined pseudo propagation delay. In a preferred embodiment, the pseudo propagation delay is assured to be situated within a pre-determined time interval.Type: GrantFiled: February 15, 2006Date of Patent: October 16, 2012Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Karl Torbjörn Wigren, Ari Kangas

Publication number: 20120258729Abstract: The position of a mobile device served in a cell of a serving node of a wireless communication network is estimated by estimating an angle-of-arrival (AoA) between the mobile device and the serving node based on a precoding matrix indicator (PMI) determined for the serving node in a downlink direction or for the mobile device in an uplink direction. Also estimated is the AoA between the mobile device and a non-serving neighbor node of the wireless communication network based on a PMI determined for the neighbor node in the downlink direction or for the mobile device in the uplink direction. The downlink and/or uplink AoA estimation can be further enhanced by employing interference cancellation in the mobile device and in the radio node, respectively. The position of the mobile device is estimated based on the estimated AoAs.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 12, 2011Publication date: October 11, 2012Applicant: TELEFONAKTIEBOLAGET LM ERICSSON (PUBL)Inventors: Iana Siomina, Ari Kangas, Torbjörn Wigren

Patent number: 8233920Abstract: A wireless communication network determines positioning data for a given mobile terminal, in response to receiving a positioning event trigger for that mobile terminal. The network sends the positioning data to the mobile terminal via control-plane signaling, for transfer by the mobile terminal to the user plane. Correspondingly, the mobile terminal receives the positioning data over the control plane, transfers it to the user plane, and transmits the positioning data or location information derived from the positioning data, via user-plane signaling. As such, network-performed positioning measurements and/or geographic coordinate data derived therefrom are transferred from the control plane, to the user plane, for flexible and transparent transmission from the mobile terminal to a given node having a user-plane connection with the mobile terminal. Such a node may be essentially any type of communication device, system, or server, internal or external to the network.Type: GrantFiled: May 14, 2009Date of Patent: July 31, 2012Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Dirk Gerstenberger, Ari Kangas, Daniel Larsson, Torbjörn Wigren

Publication number: 20120163515Abstract: A wireless device (24) receives a reference signal over a radio channel (21). The reference signal may be Positioning Reference Signals (PRS) and/or Common Referencing Signals (CRS), and may be transmitted from a transmitter (22). The wireless device (24) comprises a correlator (100); a reference signal detector (102); a threshold selector (106); and a reference signal analyzer (108). The correlator (100) use a signal received from the radio channel (21) and a replica of the reference signal to provide a correlator output value. Patent number: 8200250Abstract: The present invention relates to a method and arrangement for achieving transformations of received positioning information according to a first reporting format to positioning information according to a second format such as to allow a seamless transformation and handling of the positioning confidence values, i.e. the probability that the terminal is actually located in the region determined by the applied positioning method. The method derives an approximation of the shape-defining parameters for the second reporting format such as to minimize a criterion function including the predefined target confidence value and determining the deviation of the confidence value for the approximated shape from the target confidence value.Type: GrantFiled: April 11, 2007Date of Patent: June 12, 2012Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson (Publ)Inventors: Torbjorn Wigren, Ari Kangas

Publication number: 20120052869Abstract: Allocation of cell IDs in a cellular communication system includes determining a candidate allocation pattern of primary and secondary synchronization signal sequences for a candidate set of two or more cells. A performance metric is applied to the candidate allocation pattern to ascertain a performance indicator for the candidate allocation pattern, wherein the performance indicator indicates a quality of positioning performance for the candidate set of two or more cells. Cell-specific positioning performance for each cell in the candidate set of cells can be considered to derive the performance indicator of the candidate allocation pattern. If the performance indicator indicates acceptable positioning performance, primary and secondary synchronization signal sequences are allocated to respective ones of base stations corresponding to the two or more cells in accordance with the candidate allocation pattern. Otherwise, the process is repeated for a different candidate allocation pattern.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 8, 2009Publication date: March 1, 2012Inventors: Bengt Lindoff, Niklas Andgart, Ari Kangas, Anders Rosenqvist

Patent number: 8085704Abstract: The present invention relates to methods and apparatuses as well as a measurement report signal for reporting measurements on ranging signals (RS1-RS4) received by a mobile station from satellites (SV1-SV4) or calculating a position based on such measurements, wherein each of said ranging signal comprises a stream (201) of data bits (202) spread by a spreading code (203). After synchronizing (501) to data bit edges in the stream of data bits on a ranging signal, a position in time modulo the data bit length for said stream of data bits with respect to a selected point in time is measured (502). The measured position in time could be used by the apparatus performing the measurements on the received ranging signals for calculating (504) the position of the mobile station. Alternatively the apparatus could transmit (503) a wireless signal including data representing said measured position in time, allowing the mobile station position to be determined in another apparatus (101).Type: GrantFiled: October 11, 2004Date of Patent: December 27, 2011Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget L M Ericsson (Publ)Inventors: Ari Kangas, Karl Torbjorn Wigren

Patent number: 8054869Abstract: A downlink Channel Quality Indicator (CQI) is estimated in two steps. Initially, one or more subsets of received reference symbols are selected. If the transmitter may transmit signals in one or more of two or more frequency bands, optimal frequency bands are selected based on a first subset of reference symbols. If the transmitter may transmit using one of two or more VACs, an optimal VAC is selected based on the first or a second subset of reference symbols. An SINR is subsequently calculated for the selected frequency band and VAC combination, based on more than the subset(s) of reference symbols.Type: GrantFiled: July 17, 2008Date of Patent: November 8, 2011Assignee: Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson (publ)Inventors: Ari Kangas, Markus Ringström, Darlan Cavalcante Moreira
