  • Publication number: 20200201399
Abstract: Keyboards are disclosed that are retractable. Movable magnetic or mechanical linkage elements are configured to reposition keycaps and stabilizers between different relative positions. Structures in a movable layer can act on the keycaps or stabilizers to move the keycaps and stabilizers into a retracted position for storage and for saving space in an electronic device. The stabilizers can be scissor mechanisms, butterfly mechanisms, and similar devices. The movable layer can be moved in response to rotation of a hinge or other mechanical element in the electronic device.

  • Publication number: 20200203095
Abstract: Key assemblies having a foldable stabilizer are disclosed. The stabilizer can be positioned under a keycap to help guide the keycap and limit rotation or movement when the key is pressed. The stabilizer can have a pointed-star shape with multiple folding axes and can have multiple points of connection or linkage to the keycap or other surrounding components. The stabilizer can unfold or flatten as the keycap is pressed and can fold as the keycap is raised.

  • Patent number: 10683591
Abstract: An item such as a removable device cover or a portable electronic device may have a fabric hinge. The item may have first and second structures that are configured to rotate relative to each other. The fabric hinge may have first and second fabric layers that are coupled to the first structure and third and fourth fabric layers that are coupled to the second structure. A center portion of the fabric hinge may have one side that is coupled to the first and second fabric layers and an opposing second side that is coupled to the third and fourth fabric layers. In the center portion, first strands of material may extend outwardly into the first and fourth fabric layers and second parallel strands that are interspersed with the first strands may extend outwardly into the second and third fabric layers.

  • Publication number: 20190101960
Abstract: An electronic device includes an enclosure formed of a plurality of layers cooperating to define an interior volume. The enclosure includes a first layer formed of a first material and defining a user input surface of the enclosure and a first portion of a side surface of the enclosure. The enclosure also includes a second layer, formed of a second material different from the first material, positioned below the first layer and defining a second portion of the side surface of the enclosure. The enclosure also includes a third layer, formed of a third material different from the first and second materials, positioned below the second layer and defining a bottom surface of the enclosure and a third portion of the side surface of the enclosure.

  • Publication number: 20190094973
Abstract: An electronic device has a housing that forms an exterior surface of the electronic device. An array of actuators is coupled to the housing and is operable to move the housing in order to produce sound waves and/or haptic output via the exterior surface. In this way, less space is consumed by acoustic and haptic devices as compared to similar conventional devices, thereby allowing for thinner electronic devices and/or room for other components within the housing. The actuators may be operable to move different regions of the housing to produce sound waves and/or haptic output within different frequency ranges.

  • Publication number: 20190091946
Abstract: Embodiments are directed to a keyboard or other input structure having a continuous fiber material. In one aspect, the continuous fiber material is disposed in a layered fiber pattern under tension. The continuous fiber material is continuous in that it is not broken or severed within the webbing. Heat and pressure are then applied to form a structural web. The resulting structural web may be stronger than a webbing of conventional materials yet with reduced relative weight.

  • Patent number: 9951425
Abstract: The described embodiments relate generally to methods for enhancing cosmetic surfaces of friction stir processed parts. More specifically a method for applying cold spray over a weld line generated by friction stir processing is disclosed. Methods are also disclosed for blending the cold spray applied over the weld line with a cosmetic surface portion of the friction stir processed parts. In some embodiments cold spray can be used to create a cosmetic joint between various parts. Structural joints between first and second substrates may also be formed via solid state deposition. Such joints may be strengthened through use of a hidden weld, mechanical interlocking between the substrates, and/or coupling via fasteners.

  • Publication number: 20160216741
Abstract: A portable computing device is disclosed. The portable computing device includes a top case of a reduced size and shape. In order to assemble a keyboard assembly in the top case, the keyboard assembly is designed to deform or bend without causing damage to the keyboard assembly or a circuit board of the keyboard assembly. Methods of inserting the keyboard assembly into the top case are described. Also, in order to secure the keyboard assembly with the top case, an alignment tool is described having several fastener receives designed to detach from a main body of the alignment tool. The fastener receivers may be aligned at a non-zero angle that is substantially similar with a non-zero angle of end openings of the circuit board and end cavities of the top case. This allows for easier assembly of several fasteners. The keyboard assembly may further include a keyboard shield.
