  • Patent number: 7020438
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for selecting an access point in a wireless communication system comprising mobile terminals and access points. To enable the mobile terminals to take into account the prevailing conditions within the entire coverage area of an access point more effectively than before, sets of attributes are sent from mobile terminals to the currently serving access point, each set to contain at least one attribute indicating the quality of a wireless link between the serving access point and the sending mobile terminal. Based on the sets, a service report describing current service conditions in the coverage area of the access point is formed and transmitted to at least one mobile terminal. This terminal examines the service report of at least one access point and, based on the examination, selects the access point to which a wireless link is to be established.

  • Patent number: 7006447
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, provides for field-testing and calibration of a WLAN device. In testing of the receive portion of the WLAN device, test apparatus is provided with a transmit signal of known characteristics. The test apparatus selectably attenuates the transmit signal to form an attenuated signal. The WLAN device is connected to receive the transmit signal, once attenuated by the test apparatus. Responsive to differences between measured and calculated characteristics of the transmit signal, calibration for determination of proper operation of the WLAN device is made and calibration of the WLAN device is effectuated.

  • Patent number: 6941409
Abstract: A switching and connecting arrangement for coupling external and internal antennas, wherein the arrangement comprises at least a diversity switch arranged on a circuit board for selecting a first antenna or a second antenna. The arrangement also comprises a first integrated antenna switch arranged on said circuit board for selecting a first antenna and connecting it electrically to said diversity switch, wherein the first antenna switch is forced mechanically to select the first external antenna instead of the first internal antenna when it is coupled to said switch, and to select the first internal antenna when disconnected; a second integrated antenna switch arranged on said circuit board for selecting a second antenna and connecting it electrically to said diversity switch, wherein the second antenna switch is forced mechanically to select the second external antenna instead of the second internal antenna when it is coupled to said switch, and to select the second internal antenna when disconnected.

  • Patent number: 6693915
Abstract: The invention relates to a method in a wireless data transmission system (1) which comprises wireless terminals (MT1-MT4), at least a first access point (AP1) and a first access point controller (AC1), a second access point (AP2) and a second access point controller (AC2). In the data transmission, data frames are used. In the invention, two allocation strategies are defined of which two are selected at a time. From the data frames, a first starting point (TS11, TS21) and a second starting point (TS1n, TS2n) are determined. In order to select a strategy, it is examined whether there is other traffic on the channel. If other traffic can be detected, it is examined which allocation strategy is selected, and an allocation strategy which is different from that of the examined connection is selected for the connection to be set up. However, if traffic is not detected, it is possible to select the allocation strategy freely.

  • Patent number: 6614198
Abstract: A method and an apparatus for controlling release of a hoisting motor brake in a hoisting apparatus, where electricity is used as the driving force and a squirrel cage motor as the hoisting motor for hoisting or lowering a load attached to a hoisting member of the hoisting apparatus. Controlling of brake release comprises measuring the current and supply voltage of the hoisting motor after the start-up period of the hoisting motor and determining a variable which describes the load of the hoisting apparatus from the current and supply voltage. The variable describing the load is compared with a pre-determined limit value and hoisting or lowering of the load is interrupted if the variable describing the hoisting apparatus load exceeds the limit value set for the hoisting movement when the load is hoisted or if it exceeds the limit value set for the lowering movement when the load is lowered.
