  • Patent number: 6535355
Abstract: An information handling system, such as a disk drive, includes a base, a disk stack rotatably attached to the base, and an actuator assembly movably attached to the base. The actuator assembly also includes a load spring and a slider attached to said load spring. A ramp is also attached to the base near the disk stack. The ramp is used to load and unload the sliders to and from the disk. The slider and load spring are attached to form a gimballing connection between the slider and the load spring. A motion limiting device is attached to either the slider or the load beam to limit the pitch and roll of the slider with respect to the load spring at the gimballing connection. The motion limiters can be added to the load spring or the slider or both. An actuator assembly may also include a stiff lead. A slider including at least one transducer is attached to the stiff lead. The slider also has at least one pad electrically connected to the transducer.

  • Patent number: 6333836
Abstract: A head suspension assembly including a head and a suspension coupled to the head to support the head to fly above the disc surface for operation. The head includes a slider having a bearing surface and a transducer having a transducer element. The suspension supports the head at a pitch angle determined so that close point between the head and disc surface is located at the slider spaced from the transducer. In one embodiment of the head suspension, the suspension supports the head during operation at a pitch angle &thgr;P≦(dR−dW)/dA-B−4 dC/l to avoid transducer contact with media asperities with mean roughness.

  • Patent number: 6275356
Abstract: A disk drive system includes a base, a disk rotatably attached to the base, and an actuator assembly movably attached to the base. A ramp for loading and unloading a transducing element to and from the disk is also attached to the base. The ramp has an inclined surface and a flat surface that has a lower coefficient of friction than the surface associated with a parking detente. This is accomplished by molding features into the inclined surface and the flat surface and leaving the surface associated with the parking detent substantially smooth or featureless. This can also be accomplished using a molding process in which two materials are used. A first material will produce a coefficient of friction which is higher than the second material.

  • Patent number: 6233118
Abstract: A data storage system including a head supporting transducer elements relative to a disc surface for proximity recording. The head including a slider having debris collection cavities positioned relative to a contact interface between the slider and disc surface. The debris collection cavities being designed to collect debris loosed from the disc surface to reduce thermal asperities.

  • Patent number: 6195235
Abstract: A slider for supporting transducer elements in a data storage system including a granular particle composition including multiple layers of particles for providing a contact interface between the slider and disc surface. The multiple particle layers provide an uneven surface structure for stiction control. The multiple particle layers provide for wear while maintaining an uneven surface structure for stiction control.

  • Patent number: 6134076
Abstract: A disk drive system includes a base, a disk stack rotatably attached to the base, and an actuator assembly movably attached to the base. A ramp assembly includes a set of ramps for loading and unloading the transducing elements to and from the disks in the disk stack. The ramp assembly is attached to the base. The ramp assembly has a series of fixed ramps which are attached to a rigid structure. The ramps have four degrees of freedom which allow for adjustability in the formation of the ramp so that the E-block or actuator formed from separate parts can move with respect to the disks and with respect to the ramps without excessive interference to load or unload the sliders which carry the transducers with respect to the disk. Each individual ramp unit is an integral part. The individual ramp units are positioned with respect to a rigid structure and then fixed into the proper position by either laser ablation, rod melt approaches, adhesives or attachment with mechanical fasteners.
