  • Patent number: 5172673
Abstract: An internal combustion engine having a fuel injection furnishing fuel to a cylinder via a cylinder head passage leading to a cylinder inlet valve and having an air inlet channel member furnishing air to the cylinder via the passage has a heating element having a heat sink and a PTC heating tablet on the heat sink recessed into an opening in the cylinder head or the air inlet channel to receive fuel from the fuel injector and facilitate mixing of the fuel and air being furnished to the cylinder substantially free of interference with the flow of the air to the cylinder.

  • Patent number: 4967706
Abstract: An internal-combustion engine of the injection type comprises a cylinder (1) which is provided with an inlet channel (4) with inlet valve (5). An inlet tube (2) with fuel injector (3) is fixed on this inlet channel. A heating element with a heat sink (11, 12), electrical resistance means (16) and current supply means (14, 17, 18, 20) projects into the inlet channel of the cylinder. In order to avoid cold spot problems, the heating element (11 to 16) is not fitted in a thermally insulated manner, and is integrated in a plate (6) which is clamped between the inlet tube (2) and the head of the cylinder (1). The electrical resistance means (16) are provided in a chamber (11) whose top face forms part of the heat sink. A cylindrically curved wall (12) preferably connects to the chamber (11) and is connected to this plate by means of material bridges (10).

  • Patent number: 4898142
Abstract: The invention relates to a combustion engine with fuel injection system, having at least one cylinder with an air inlet passage, into which passage opens a fuel spray valve which is connected to a fuel pipe with pump. Disposed in the fuel pipe or on the spray valve is a fuel heating element with which the infed fuel can come into direct contact.

  • Patent number: 4834053
Abstract: An internal combustion engine is provided with a heat sink 6 with thermistor pellets 10, 22, 32 of PTC material. This heat sink is held in position inside a through passage for the fuel mixture through the action of clamp means 14; 17; 23; 33 which press the heat sink against the inside surface of the through passage. Obviously the heat sink is electrically insulated with respect to the engine. Advantages are that no plastics contact carrier and an opening in the wall of the manifold are needed and that the temperature peak is moved from the unloaded side towards the middle of the thickness of the thermistor pellets.

  • Patent number: 4628889
Abstract: A device preheats a fuel mixture in an intake manifold of a combustion engine, the device corresponding a cylindrical body having a side wall and a bottom disposed in the wall of the intake manifold. The body is arranged on an electro- and heat insulating contact bearer and is secured on the intake manifold in an electro- and heat conducting way, the bottom of the body being provided with PTC pills which are connected to a current conductor and are secured on the bottom in an electro- and heat conducting way. The bottom has such a thickness and shape that during preheating the fuel mixture a homogeneous heat conduction is created, the side wall of the body having securing means to secure the preheater, and wherein it has such a thickness that together with the securing means it provides the required heat resistance upon heat transfer from and to the intake manifold.

  • Patent number: 4501255
Abstract: A heater for diesel fuel filter system has a thermally and electrically conductive heating plate mounted in a housing chamber so that diesel fuel flowing between the chamber inlet and outlet toward a filter normally passes over both sides of the heating plate in heat-transfer relation to the plate. Self-regulating electrical resistance heater discs of a ceramic material of positive temperature coefficient of resistivity are mounted on the plate in thermally and electrically conductive relation to the plate for heating the plate. The heater discs are arranged so that fuel passing through the chamber also flows directly over the heater discs.
