Patent number: 9687365Abstract: An ankle module for a prosthetic foot can have an adapter portion pivotally coupled to a base portion. The base portion can be coupled to the prosthetic foot. The adapter portion can have a coupling member that removably couples the prosthetic foot to a prosthetic pylon or socket. The adapter portion can also have cylinders housing pistons slidably displaceable within the cylinders. An actuator is selectively actuatable to place the cylinders in fluid communication, allowing a fluid to flow between the cylinders as an angular position of the adapter portion is adjusted relative to the base portion, thereby adjusting the dorsi-plantar position between the adapter portion and the base portion of the ankle module. The actuator can be selectively actuatable to fluidly isolate the cylinders from each other so that the angular position of the adapter portion relative to the base portion remains substantially fixed.Type: GrantFiled: August 19, 2015Date of Patent: June 27, 2017Assignee: Össur hfInventors: Sigurdur Ásgeirsson, David Landry, Sigurdur Olafsson, Grímur Jónsson, Arinbjörn V. Patent number: 9387096Abstract: Methods and systems are used for monitoring a global position or location of a prosthetic or orthotic device and to provide feedback control of the device. Certain methods may employ remote transmitting devices and receivers to recognize when a prosthetic or orthotic device user is in a moving vehicle and, therefore, initiate automatic shut-off, driving mode, or relaxed mode. Other methods may employ remote transmitting devices and receivers to identify the global position of the prosthetic or orthotic device, compare the global position to a stored terrain mapped database and output feedback control instructions and/or alerts to the prosthetic or orthotic device based at least in part on the stored terrain mapping information.Type: GrantFiled: June 16, 2010Date of Patent: July 12, 2016Assignee: Ossur HFInventors: Ragnar Sverrisson, Arinbjörn V. Clausen

Patent number: 9271851Abstract: Systems and methods for sensing actuating a prosthetic ankle are disclosed. In one example, the system, such as an actuated prosthetic ankle joint, detects that the user has moved to a relaxed position, such as sitting, reclining, crawling, or leaning. In response, the actuated prosthetic ankle joint actively adjusts the angle between the members of the ankle to a relaxed state. The system may further detect when the user has moved to exit the relaxed position, and may actively adjust the angle between the members of the ankle to an exit state.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 2011Date of Patent: March 1, 2016Assignee: Össur hf.Inventors: Arinbjörn V. Clausen, Heidrun G. Ragnarsdottir, Helgi Jonsson

Patent number: 9017418Abstract: Geomagnetic methods and systems are used for monitoring the directionality of a prosthetic or orthotic device. Certain methods may include measuring multiple data points over a particular time interval to identify orientation information with respect to a prosthetic or orthotic device and/or used in the real-time control of the prosthetic or orthotic device. In certain examples, multiple points may be further compared with stored orientation data associated with predefined unsafe gait patterns. Control instructions and/or alerts based on the geomagnetic measurements can then be generated for the prosthetic or orthotic device, such as if the orientation data information matches one of the predefined unsafe gait patterns.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 2010Date of Patent: April 28, 2015Assignee: Össur hfInventor: Arinbjörn V. Patent number: 8869626Abstract: Systems and method for monitoring gait dynamics are disclosed. The performance of an orthotic or prosthetic device or other device associated with a limb may be measured based on the resistance of a bending sensor. Data from the sensors is gathered or processed, particularly for purposes of alignment, safety, failure, usage, selection, and artificial proprioception. Information relating to the device may be outputted visually or auditorily to an individual.Type: GrantFiled: February 24, 2012Date of Patent: October 28, 2014Assignee: Össur hfInventors: Arinbjörn V. Clausen, Magnús Oddsson

Patent number: 8801802Abstract: Embodiments include a system for controlling motion of a human limb. The system may include a plurality of mechatronic devices, each of which may be in communication with at least one other of the plurality of mechatronic devices. Each of the mechatronic devices includes one or more of a processor, an actuator, or a sensor. One or more of the mechatronic devices may be configured to generate a control state for at least one other of the plurality of mechatronic devices based on the communicated data. In one embodiment, the communicated data is used to synchronize the mechatronic devices. In one embodiment, one or more of the mechatronic devices is configured to receive executable instructions for controlling an actuator via a communications interface.Type: GrantFiled: February 15, 2006Date of Patent: August 12, 2014Assignee: Össur hfInventors: Magnús Oddsson, Arinbjörn V.
