  • Publication number: 20090054893
Abstract: A pressure safety system is provided for use with electrosurgical instruments providing pressurized ionized gas to a surgical site. The pressure safety system includes a series of three cascaded pressure change members to control the pressure of gas delivered to a patient. Pressure safety apparatus for use with electrosurgical instruments providing pressurized ionized gas to a surgical site are also provided. Electrosurgical instruments utilizing the pressure safety system and apparatus are also provided. The instruments include a hand-held applicator, a portable actuator assembly and the pressure safety system to control the pressure of gas delivered to a patient.

  • Publication number: 20090048594
Abstract: An electrosurgical instrument for providing pressurized ionized gas to a surgical site includes a hand-held applicator having proximal and distal ends, a gas delivery member adapted to deliver pressurized ionizable gas to the proximity of an electrode located adjacent the distal end of the hand-held applicator. A portable actuator assembly is included that is capable of receiving a source of pressurized ionizable gas therein. The actuator controls the delivery of the gas and energy to the hand-held applicator. A pressure safety connects to the portable actuator and to the hand-held applicator. A pressure safety system having two or more cascaded pressure change members connects between the input port and the output port, the pressure change members are configured to regulate pressurized gas into the environment until the portable actuator assembly exceeds a predetermined threshold.

  • Publication number: 20080243118
Abstract: An electrosurgical pencil configured and adapted to support an electrocautery blade. A strain gauge is affixed to the proximal end of the electrocautery blade and measures the displacement of the blade as a result of resistance and drag acting on the blade. The electrosurgical pencil also includes a meter electrically connected to the strain gauge for monitoring either a change in voltage, a change in electrical current or a change in optical wavelength. The amount of blade displacement as measured by the strain gauge is available for display to the surgeon and/or as sensory input for a control circuit in the electrosurgical generator that modulates the generator output waveform. The electrosurgical pencil further includes a control circuit electrically coupled between the electrocautery blade and the electrosurgical generator. The control circuit is configured and adapted to control power supplied to electrocautery blade based on the displacement measured by the strain gauge.

  • Patent number: 7393354
Abstract: An electrosurgical pencil (100) configured and adapted to support an electrocautery blade (116). A strain gauge (130) is affixed to the proximal, end of the electrocautery blade and measures the displacement of the blade as a result of resistance and drag acting on the blade. The electrosurgical pencil also includes a meter electrically connected to the strain gauge for monitoring either a change in voltage, a change in electrical current or a change in optical wavelength. The amount of blade displacement as measured by the strain gauge is available for display to the surgeon and/or as sensory input for a control circuit in the electrosurgical generator (118) that modulates the generator output waveform. The electrosurgical pencil further includes a control circuit electrically coupled between the electrocautery blade and the electrosurgical generator. The control circuit is configured and adapted to control power supplied to electrocautery blade based on the displacement measured by the strain gauge.

  • Publication number: 20080123716
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to thermal profiling systems for hypothermic and/or ablative energy systems and methods of their use. According to an aspect of the present disclosure, a system for profiling a thermal or electromagnetic treatment system, including an energy delivery probe, is provided. The profiling system includes a bath including a fitting supported on a side wall thereof configured for selective insertion of a distal tip of probe therethrough; a test gel disposed within the bath; and at least one piece of a reactive medium submerged in the test gel.

  • Patent number: 6499358
Abstract: A torque apparatus for the installation and removal of threaded connecting device that employs a plurality of leaf spring elements engaging a plurality of asymmetrical drive teeth sides to establish preset torque values in a hermetically sealed configuration or a variable range of preset torque values in a second configuration. The preset torque values can be readily changed in the second configuration by employing different quantities of leaf springs, differing leaf spring designs, or varying the geometry of the rotor drive teeth. The leaf spring to rotor drive teeth interface provides a slip mechanism to prevent over-torquing when torque values for the installation of a threaded connecting type device is exceeded. While both torque wrench configurations are sterilizable, the torque wrench that is capable of full disassembly for sterilization and use thereafter in a sterilized environment, is reconfigurable for different torque applications without calibration.

  • Patent number: 5312329
Abstract: An ultrasonic and electrosurgical handpiece housing has an axis, a distal end, a proximal end and a passage defined by an inside wall. A piezo stack has elements carried along a plane generally transverse to the axis. A retainer for the elements has distal, intermediate and proximal portions. The distal portion has a fastener; the proximal portion has a threaded shoulder bolt. The stack about the shoulder has an energy input and a reference output positioned axially apart from one another. An insulating sleeve about the bolt is between central openings of the elements and the bolt. A pair of insulators about the bolt has the stack therebetween; one insulator is between the plane and the stack and the other is near the threads. The intermediate portion attaches to the housing at the plane with decoupling and sealing. An irrigation channel conveys fluid. The drive energy input, the feedback signal and the reference outputs are insulated by the sleeve and pair from the bolt.
