    Abstract: A metal strand is cast by a continuous casting machine. The strand passes through a series of secondary cooling zones. The rate at which coolant is supplied to each zone is varied by means of valves which are controlled in accordance with the casting speed so as to maintain a desired thermal profile for the temperature along the surface of the strand.
