  • Patent number: 7857522
Abstract: An oil film bearing assembly rotatably supports the neck of a roll in a rolling mill. The bearing assembly comprises a housing containing a sleeve bearing and a thrust bearing. A circular lock assembly coacts with the thrust bearing to axially retain the bearing assembly on the roll neck. The lock assembly is axially received on and is rotatable into and out of mechanical interengagement with the roll neck. First bearing elements are carried by and project inwardly from the lock assembly to contact a surface of the roll neck at a first location, and second bearing elements project inwardly from the housing to contact an outer surface of the lock assembly at a second location spaced axially from the first location.

  • Patent number: 7500374
Abstract: An apparatus for urging an oil film bearing onto and off of a roll neck in a rolling mill comprises an annular hydraulically actuated piston/cylinder unit mounted on a cylindrical section of the roll neck. The cylindrical neck section is delimited at one end by a circular shoulder on the roll neck, and at the opposite end by a circular groove in the roll neck. A retaining ring has lock arms pivotally movable into seated positions in the groove. The piston/cylinder unit is operable in a first mode in an abutting relationship with the lock arms to urge the bearing onto the roll neck, and is operative in a second mode in an abutting relationship with the shoulder to urge the bearing off of the roll neck. The piston/cylinder unit and the lock arms having complimentary tapered surfaces arranged to coact in urging the lock arms inwardly into their seated positions in response to the abutment of the piston/cylinder unit with the lock arms.

  • Publication number: 20080207420
Abstract: A method of at least partially filling a keyway in the metal sleeve of a rolling mill oil film bearing comprises machining a pocket into the keyway. A metal key is provided with a shape complimentary to that of the pocket, with at least one exterior dimension of the key exceeding a respective internal dimension of the pocket. The key is thermally shrunk to reduce its at least one external dimension to an extent sufficient to accommodate insertion of the key in the pocket. The thermally shrunk key is then inserted in the pocket, and allowed to thermally expand, thereby establishing an interference fit between the key and the pocket.

  • Patent number: 6851676
Abstract: An inner seal ring is disclosed for use in an oil film bearing for a roll in a rolling mill. The roll has a neck with an intermediate section tapering from an end face to a reduced diameter end section contained within a sleeve. The sleeve is fixed in relation to the roll neck and is journalled for rotation in a bushing contained within a chock. A flexible neck seal is mounted on the intermediate section of the roll neck for rotation with the roll within a seal end plate fixed to the chock. The inner seal ring comprises a circular midsection with an annular face on one side and with inner and outer flanges projecting from an opposite side. The inner flange is configured to engage the neck seal, the outer flange is configured to coact in spaced relationship with the seal end plate to define a first labyrinth, and the annular face is contoured to coact in an abutting relationship with the roll end face in defining a second labyrinth.

  • Patent number: 6575638
Abstract: An apparatus for retaining a bearing assembly on the neck of a roll in a rolling mill. The apparatus includes an adaptor element having outwardly projecting first lugs circumferentially separated by first flutes. Fasteners detachably secure the adaptor element to a distal end of the roll neck. A locking element, which comprises an integral component of the bearing assembly, has inwardly projecting second lugs circumferentially separated by second flutes. The locking element is rotatable between an unlocked position at which its second lugs are aligned with the first flutes of the adaptor element to accommodate axial shifting of the bearing assembly onto and off of the roll neck, and a locked position at which its second lugs are aligned with the first lugs of the adaptor element to axially retain the bearing assembly on the roll neck.

  • Patent number: 6415489
Abstract: A tool is disclosed for axially urging a bearing assembly into and out of a seated position on the neck of a roll in a rolling mill. The tool includes a piston surrounded by a cylinder. The piston is removably fixed to the roll neck and is configured to internally subdivide the cylinder into first and second chambers. Fluid conduits are arranged to alternatively pressurize the first and second chambers to alternatively shift the cylinder with respect to the thus fixed piston in opposite first and second directions. Movement of the cylinder in the first direction urges the bearing assembly into its seated position, and movement of the cylinder in the opposite second direction dislodges the bearing assembly from its seated position.
