  • Publication number: 20180266239
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for estimating the tool center position of a down-hole tool, the geometry of the borehole, and/or a mud parameter based on sensor measurements from the downhole tool, even when the downhole tool center is moving over time. At least one sensor may obtain a set of measurements that relates to distance-to-borehole in a borehole at a number of azimuths. A processor may estimate a set of values defining borehole boundary and a set of positions of a center of the downhole tool in the borehole, at least in part by estimating the borehole boundary based on the set of measurements assuming a previously estimated position of the center of the downhole tool is true and estimating the position of the center of the downhole tool based on the set of measurements assuming a previously estimated borehole boundary is true, and iterating at least until convergence.

  • Publication number: 20180003044
Abstract: A method for configuring transmission signals is disclosed. The method includes receiving a signal from a downhole tool in a wellbore. The signal may include a telemetry portion and a noise portion. The method also includes reproducing the telemetry portion based at least partially on the signal. Further, the method includes subtracting the telemetry portion from the signal. The method includes estimating, based at least partially on the subtraction, the noise portion of the signal. The method also includes altering a transmission configuration of the downhole tool based at least partially on the noise portion of the signal.

  • Publication number: 20180003527
Abstract: Sensor array noise reduction is provided. Techniques involve systems and methods for reducing sensor array noise by estimating an instantaneous frequency of a coherent noise signal in a logging system. The instantaneous frequency may be estimated based on a rotation of an electric motor in the logging system, or may estimated by applying suitable signal processing algorithms on measurements in the logging system. A virtual measurement may be computer using the instantaneous frequency. The virtual measurement may be demodulated to obtain a baseband signal, and noise may be removed from the baseband signal to obtain a denoised signal.

  • Publication number: 20170337675
Abstract: Image feature alignment is provided. In some implementations, a computer-readable tangible medium includes instructions that direct a processor to access a reference feature point associated with a high contrast region in a first sub-image that is associated with a first section of a borehole. Instructions are also present that direct the processor to identify several candidate feature points in a second sub-image associated with a second section of the borehole adjacent to the first section of the borehole, with each of the candidate feature points being believed to possibly be associated with the high contrast region. Additional instructions are present that direct the processor to prune the candidate feature points using global solution pruning to arrive at a matching candidate feature point in the second sub-image.

  • Publication number: 20160108724
Abstract: Sensor array noise reduction is provided. In one possible implementation a logging and control system includes a sensor array noise reduction manager configured to receive measurements from two or more sensors and apply a selected demixing vector to filter one or more noise sources from the measurements and improve a signal to noise ratio of a telemetry signal in the measurements. In another possible implementation a sensor array noise reduction manager for improving a signal to noise ratio of a signal includes a sensor interface configured to receive the signal, which includes information associated with an operating condition, from two or more sensors. The sensor array noise reduction manager also includes a noise reduction module to simultaneously remove noise associated with one or more noise sources from the received signal through use of a demixing vector.

  • Publication number: 20150275659
Abstract: A technique facilitates diagnosis of a telemetry system, such as a mud pulse telemetry system or an electro-magnetic telemetry system. The technique comprises operating a telemetry system in a wellbore and collecting a variety of data. The data may relate to a rig state, a downhole state, a signal state, a surface state, and/or other suitable types of data. The data is processed to determine whether states of operation indicated by the data match states indicating a problem with operation of the telemetry system. If a problem is detected, appropriate information regarding the problem is transmitted for use in correcting the problem.

  • Patent number: 8380438
Abstract: A method for attenuating pump noise in a wellbore drilling telemetry system includes spectrally analyzing measurements of a parameter related to operation of a pump used to move drilling fluid through the drilling system. Synthetic spectra of the parameter are generated based on a number of pumps in the pump system and a selected number of harmonic frequencies for each pump. Which of the synthetic spectra most closely matches the spectrally analyzed parameter output is determined. The most closely matching synthetic spectrum is used to reduce noise in a signal detected proximate the Earth's surface transmitted from a part of the drilling system disposed in a wellbore.
