  • Patent number: 7051970
Abstract: A tape drive system is disclosed. The tape drive system includes at least one tape reel assembly, a storage tape, and at least one pack arm assembly. The tape reel assembly includes a hub defining a tape winding surface about which is wound the storage tape. The pack arm assembly is disposed adjacent the tape reel assembly and includes a pack arm and a pin. The pack arm defines a guide defining a pivot end and has at least one flexible flange cantilevered from a side of the guide. The pin is coupled to the tape drive system. In this regard, the pack arm is slidingly coupled to the pin and configured to follow the wound storage tape by moving axially relative to the hub and radially about the pivot end.

  • Patent number: 6811472
Abstract: In one embodiment, the invention is directed toward inline lapping of magnetic tape. The lapping process is performed inline with one or more other magnetic tape manufacturing processes. In this manner, the number of times the magnetic tape is un-spooled and then re-spooled can be reduced. Consequently, the amount of handling of the individual tape pancakes can also be reduced, thus avoiding damage to the edge of the tape, or other damage associated with tape pancake handling.

  • Patent number: 6698675
Abstract: A leader block assembly including a leader block, a tape clamp, and an elastomeric member. The leader block forms a channel defined by opposing sidewalls extending from a base, each sidewall forming a lip having an under surface. The tape clamp is nested within the channel and includes a bottom surface, opposing sides, and at least one cantilevered leg positioned at each of the opposing sides, respectively. Each leg extends upwardly relative to the bottom surface. The elastomeric member is disposed between the leader block and the tape clamp, and biases the tape clamp to a locked position in which the legs engage the under surface of the respect lips providing positive engagement between the tape clamp and the leader block.

  • Patent number: 6353590
Abstract: The present invention provides methods and apparatus for stabilizing data storage media during laser servowriting of optical servo tracks on the media. The apparatus includes a spindle for rotating the media during servowriting, a fixed media platform, and a media support for stabilizing the vertical position of the media during servowriting. The media support may include channels to reduce or control the formation of an air bearing in the area of servowriting to stabilize the vertical positioning of the media. The media support may also include a vacuum slot for drawing a vacuum through the channels.

  • Patent number: 6305631
Abstract: A tape cartridge includes a first rotatable hub and a second rotatable hub. The first hub and the second hub are wound so that they are substantially full of the flexible recording tape. The flexible tape between the first and second hub crosses a centerline including the two hubs. Both the first rotatable hub and the second rotatable hub are removable from the cartridge. The hubs have a flange with a conical edge which nests into a first opening and a second opening in the tape cartridge with conical receiving surfaces. The conical edges have a plurality of reliefs therein to form conical teeth within each of the first and second hub. The conical teeth of one of the hubs engages the reliefs of the other hub to seal the cartridge and to support the tape between the hubs. The cartridge also includes a base, a latch for engaging the first rotatable hub and the second rotatable hub. A cartridge cover covers the latch and base.

  • Patent number: 6239938
Abstract: Drive systems for moving the optics sled in a laser servowriting system used to provide a servo pattern on the media of a magnetic data storage disk are disclosed. The drive systems include multiple actuators located about the centroidal axis of the optics sled. Moments induced by the multiple actuators acting on the optics sled can be balanced by varying the forces applied to the optics sled by the actuators. Also disclosed are control systems and methods for balancing the forces provided by the actuators by varying the gains on the signals driving the actuators.

  • Patent number: 6120357
Abstract: Systems and methods of thermal control in the carbon dioxide cleaning of data storage disks to reduce or prevent condensation on the surface of the media during cleaning with frozen carbon dioxide are disclosed. A hub recess receives at least a portion of the outer flange of the hub to improve contact between the data storage media and a media platform supporting the media. Contact between the media and the media platform may be further improved by drawing a vacuum through openings in the media platform. In addition, drawing a vacuum through a vacuum channel with an annular ring opening about the media platform and a tangential vacuum port may reduce fluttering of the media on the media platform.
