Patent number: 11973375Abstract: An annular axial flux motor includes a rotor mounted on an annular subsection of a rotatable cam ring and a stator mounted on an annular subsection of a carrier frame. The rotor includes two Halbach arrays of permanent magnets spaced from each other on the cam ring along an axial direction. The stator includes multiple phase electrical windings printed on multiple layers of a printed circuit board (PCB) that are stacked along the axial direction. The multiple layers are positioned between the Halbach arrays, with active side of the Halbach arrays facing to opposite sides of the multiple layers. The Halbach arrays are configured to generate a symmetrical magnetic field and the multiple phase electrical windings are configured to have a same rotor-dependent torque constant, such that the stator can generate a constant torque to rotate the rotor and the cam ring within a finite travel range.Type: GrantFiled: December 23, 2019Date of Patent: April 30, 2024Assignee: Magic Leap, Inc.Inventors: Arno Leon Konings, Charles Robert Schabacker, Jason Donald Mareno

Patent number: 11624919Abstract: An example head-mounted display device includes a light projector, an optical assembly arranged to direct light from a light projector to a user, and an actuator module. The optical assembly includes a variable focus lens assembly including a rigid refractive component, a shaper ring defining an aperture, and a flexible lens membrane between the shaper ring and the rigid refractive component and covering the aperture. The refractive component, the shaper ring, and the lens membrane are arranged along an axis. The refractive component and the lens membrane define a chamber containing a volume of fluid. The actuator module is configured to adjust an optical power of the variable focus lens by moving the shaper ring relative to the refractive component along the axis, such that a curvature of the lens membrane in the aperture is modified.Type: GrantFiled: May 22, 2020Date of Patent: April 11, 2023Assignee: Magic Leap, Inc.Inventors: Timothy Mark Dalrymple, David Tinch, Michael Anthony Klug, Clinton Carlisle, Jason Donald Mareno, Arno Leon Konings, Christopher Peter Couste, Charles Robert Schabacker, Bach Nguyen, Christopher John Laning, Roman Patscheider

Patent number: 11538227Abstract: An augmented reality display system can include a partially transparent eyepiece, an ambient light sensor, and an image input device. The image input device can include a light source and a spatial light modulator. The system can also include a controller that determines that no virtual content is being displayed to the user and compares the ambient light to display light to determine if a light source shutoff criterion is satisfied. If the light source shutoff criterion is satisfied, the controller can turn off the light source.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 2021Date of Patent: December 27, 2022Assignee: Magic Leap, Inc.Inventors: Arno Leon Konings, Mihailo Slobodan Zivkovic, Jose Felix Rodriguez, Ricardo Martinez Perez

Publication number: 20220044489Abstract: An augmented reality display system is disclosed. The system can include a partially transparent eyepiece, an ambient light sensor, and an image input device. The image input device can include a light source and a spatial light modulator. The system can also include a controller that determines that no virtual content is being displayed to the user and compares the ambient light to display light to determine if a light source shutoff criterion is satisfied. If the light source shutoff criterion is satisfied, the controller can turn off the light source.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 25, 2021Publication date: February 10, 2022Inventors: Arno Leon Konings, Mihailo Slobodan Zivkovic, Jose Felix Rodriguez, Ricardo Martinez Perez

Patent number: 11158129Abstract: An augmented reality display system can include a partially transparent eyepiece, an ambient light sensor, and an image input device. The image input device can include a light source and a spatial light modulator. The system can also include a controller that determines that no virtual content is being displayed to the user and compares the ambient light to display light to determine if a light source shutoff criterion is satisfied. The light source shutoff criterion can be indicative of whether shutting off the light source that illuminates the spatial light modulator will result in a change in the display light that will be user-perceptible. If the light source shutoff criterion is satisfied, the controller can turn off the light source.Type: GrantFiled: July 23, 2019Date of Patent: October 26, 2021Assignee: Magic Leap, Inc.Inventors: Arno Leon Konings, Mihailo Slobodan Zivkovic, Jose Felix Rodriguez, Ricardo Martinez Perez
