    Abstract: A spring powered cable reel, particularly for a vacuum cleaner, comprises a rotatable drum (10) from which the cable (3) is wound off during tightening of the spring (12). The drum is prevented from rotation in the winding-up direction by a brake which is releasable to allow the cable to be wound up. The brake is adapted to be locked in the released position by means of a catch assembly (17,21,24) which is actuatable by the torque of the spring (12) to apply the brake when the torque exceeds a predetermined value.
