  • Patent number: 4351883
Abstract: The subject invention relates to compositions of matter for treating aluminum surfaces for rendering them tarnish and corrosive resistant. The compositions comprise an alkali metal silicate including sodium and potassium and lithium silicates and a soluble organic polymer having displaceable hydrogens or displaced hydrogens. The organic polymers having displaceable hydrogens may be derived from hydroxyls, carboxylic acids, amides, sulfonic acids, carbohydrates, and phosphoric acids. The composition may be readily applied by spraying or dipping them in concentration less than about 5% in an aqueous system.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: February 23, 1981
Date of Patent: September 28, 1982
    Assignee: Ball Corporation
Inventors: Arnold F. Marcantonio, Paul J. Kress, John W. Powers

  • Patent number: 4278735
Abstract: Coordination compounds having good stability in aqueous systems are used to treat glass surfaces at elevated temperatures, the coordination compounds being represented by the general formula Y.sub.2 MX.sub.6 wherein Y is an alkali metal, hydrogen or ammonium, M is tin, titanium or zirconium and X is a halogen, generally fluorine or chlorine. The glass surfaces so treated are rendered chemical resistant and when treated by conventional cold-end coatings exhibit excellent strength, scratch resistance and chemical durability.

  • Patent number: 4140834
Abstract: Release and lubricating compositions are disclosed for avoiding seizure between molten glass and metal molds for forming glass articles and for improving the quality of glassware produced therefrom, comprising an aqueous dispersion containing polyphenylene sulfide, an inorganic binder, and a solid lubricant. The inorganic binder may be represented by the general formula MPO.sub.4 wherein M is a metal ion selected from the group consisting of aluminum, chromium, magnesium, iron and zinc. The particular solid lubricants include members selected from the group consisting of graphite, molybdenum disulfide, polyterafluorethylene, and mixtures thereof.

  • Patent number: 4131552
Abstract: Release and lubricating composition for avoiding seizure between molten glass and metal molds for forming glass articles, for minimizing wear between mold sections and for improving the pack of glassware, comprising, a dispersion of graphite in a polyphenylene sulfide, molds having such composition coated thereon, and a method of applying the composition to molten glass contacting surfaces comprising dispersing the composition containing graphite with the polyphenylene sulfide in the form of small particles in a carrier, applying the dispersed composition to the glass contacting surface and then curing the coating at an elevated temperature, including curing resulting from hot molds during glassware production.
