  • Patent number: 4744795
Abstract: The present invention relates to coal water slurries containing about 0.01% to 1% by weight of a water soluble terpolymer of ethylacrylate/methacrylic acid/ unsaturated carboxylic acid ester of an ethoxylated or nonethoxylated alcohol or an ethoxylated carboxylic acid. The water soluble terpolymer functions as a stablizing agent for the coal water slurry to prevent sedimentation and provide ease of pumping the coal water slurry. The water soluble terpolymer may be used alone or in combination with anionic or nonionic dispersants.

  • Patent number: 4741843
Abstract: Drilling fluid compositions and methods of using such compositions in oil, gas and water well drilling fluid operations to reduce fluid loss from the composition to the formation are disclosed. Such compositions incorporate a terpolymer formed from (a) a vinyl containing alkyl or aromatic substituted sulfonate selected from the group consisting of 2-acrylamido, 2-methyl propane sulfonic acid (AMPS), sodium vinyl sulfonate or vinyl benzene sulfonate, and method salts thereof at about 10 to 75 weight percent in the polymer; (b) an unsaturated polybasic acid such as itaconic acid at about 1 to 60 weight percent; and metal salts thereof and (c) a nonionic monomer selected from the group consisting of acrylamide, N, N-dimethylacrylamide, N-vinyl pyrrolidone, N-vinyl acetamide, or dimethylamino ethyl methacrylate and metal salts thereof at about 10 to 76 weight percent. The terpolymer should have a molecular weight between 200,000 to 1,000,000. The preferred terpolymer comprises AMPS, acrylamide and itaconic acid.

  • Patent number: 4711731
Abstract: An aqueous drilling fluid having present in an amount sufficient to disperse the fluid and to provide resistance to high temperatures and solids contamination of the drilling fluid, at least one salt of a polymer or copolymer of acrylic or methacrylic acid with alkanolamine, alkylamine, mixtures of alkanolamine and alkylamine, mixtures of lithium and alkanolamine, mixtures of lithium and alkylamine and mixtures of lithium, alkanolamine and alkylamine, the polymer having a weight average molecular weight of between about 2,000 and about 15,000 and a pH of from about 6 to about 8.5 and where mixtures of lithium and alkanolamine, lithium and alkylamine or mixtures of lithium, alkanolamine and alkylamine are used, the amount of lithium is present to give from about 30% to about 70% of the desired neutralization of the polymer and the alkanolamine and/or alkylamine is present to give from about 70% to about 30% of the desired neutralization of the polymer.

  • Patent number: 4674574
Abstract: Cementing compositions and methods of using such compositions in oil, gas and water well cementing operations to reduce fluid loss from the composition to the formation are disclosed. Such compositions incorporate a terpolymer formed from (a) an acid monomer selected from the group consisting of 2-acrylamido, 2-methyl propane sulfonic acid (AMPS), sodium vinyl sulfonate or vinyl benzene sulfonate, and metal salts thereof at about 10 to 75 weight percent in the polymer; (b) an unsaturated polybasic acid such as itaconic acid at about 1 to 60 weight percent; and metal salts thereof and (c) a nonionic monomer selected from the group consisting of acrylamide, N, N dimethylacrylamide, N-vinyl pyrrolidone, N-vinyl acetamide, or dimethylamino ethyl methacrylate and metal salts thereof at about 10 to 76 weight percent. The terpolymer should have a molecular weight between 200,000 to 1,000,000. The preferred terpolymer comprise AMPS, acrylamide and itaconic acid.

  • Patent number: 4479826
Abstract: A dispersing agent which is(a) a condensation product of a substituted phenol sulfonic acid which is an arylphenol sulfonic acid or an aralkylphenol sulfonic acid with from about 0.5 to about 4 moles of formaldehyde per mole of substituted phenol sulfonic acid, or(b) a condensation product of (i) a substituted phenol sulfonic acid which is an arylphenol sulfonic acid or an aralkylphenol sulfonic acid and (ii) an aryl sulfonic acid with from about 0.5 to about 4 moles of formaldehyde per mole of substituted phenol sulfonic acid and aryl sulfonic acid wherein the weight ratio of substituted phenol sulfonic acid to aryl sulfonic acid is from about 0.95:0.05 to about 0.05:0.95.The dispersing agent may be used directly or reacted with a salt forming cation to obtain a salt. The condensation product is useful as a dispersing agent in hydraulic cement, mortar, concrete or the like.

  • Patent number: 4457762
Abstract: Improved stabilized water slurries of carbonaceous materials are obtained by having present a condensation product or a salt thereof of a substituted phenol sulfonic acid which is(a) an arylphenol sulfonic acid,(b) an aralkylphenol sulfonic acid,(c) an arylphenol sulfonic acid and arylsulfonic acid mixture, or(d) an aralkylphenol sulfonic acid and arylsulfonic acid mixture, condensed with from about 0.5 to about 4.0 moles of formaldehyde per mole of sulfonic acid with the proviso that the weight ratio if substituted phenol sulfonic acid to arylsulfonic acid is from about 0.95:0.05 to about 0.05:0.95 in the mixtures, the condensation product being present in an amount sufficient to reduce viscosity of the water slurry of carbonaceous materials, to stabilize carbonaceous materials in the water network and to improve its pumpability. If desired, an acid form or a salt of the condensation product may be used.
