  • Patent number: 5996501
Abstract: A dual explosive charge is described that simultaneously enhances blast and fragmentation characteristics of the charge, including an inner driven charge of a non-ideal explosive surrounded by an outer charge sleeve of a more nearly ideal explosive, detonation of the outer charge resulting in an extremely high temperature, high pressure environment that accelerates reaction kinetics in the inner charge, resulting in enhanced blast and fragmentation performance of the explosive charge.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: August 27, 1997
Date of Patent: December 7, 1999
Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Air Force
Inventors: Arthur F. Spencer, John D. Corley
  • Patent number: 5977354
Abstract: Secondary explosive materials, particularly nitramines, are recovered from an explosive composition containing a mixture of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) and at least one secondary explosive by the steps of heating the explosive composition to melt the TNT, preferably using steam, separately collecting and recovering the melted TNT, treating the thus-separated secondary explosive with a material which is a solvent for TNT and a non-solvent for the secondary explosive to dissolve the TNT, removing the non-solvent from the secondary explosive, and recovering the secondary explosive.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 15, 1998
Date of Patent: November 2, 1999
Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Air Force
Inventors: Arthur F. Spencer, David F. Hartline
  • Patent number: 5910638
Abstract: A castable explosive composition consisting essentially of about 50 to 90 weight percent tungsten powder, about 3 to 40 weight percent of a high energy explosive, about 3 to 16 weight percent of an energetic binder, and about 2 to 10 weight percent aluminum powder. The aluminum powder acts as a processing aid, virtually eliminating tungsten settling.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: November 28, 1997
Date of Patent: June 8, 1999
Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the Air Force
Inventors: Arthur F. Spencer, Gary H. Parsons
  • Patent number: 4747892
Abstract: A melt castable explosive composition not based on TNT is disclosed which consists essentially of about 10 to 20 weight percent of a matrix material having a melting temperature of about 60.degree. to 100.degree. C., up to about 0.5 weight percent of an emulsifying agent and up to about 20 weight percent aluminum powder, balance high explosive. The matrix material is ozokerite wax, ozokerite modified with carnauba wax, or a waxy polyethylene.
