  • Patent number: 4481043
Abstract: A process of producing a NiCrFe alloy having a high resistance to stress corrosion cracking comprising heating a NiCrFe alloy to a temperature sufficient to enable the carbon present in the alloy body in the form of carbide deposits to enter into solution, rapidly cool the alloy body, and heat the cooled body to a temperature between 1100.degree. to 1500.degree. F. for about 1 to 30 hours.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: December 7, 1982
Date of Patent: November 6, 1984
Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the United States Department of Energy
Inventors: Arthur F. Steeves, Albert E. Bibb
  • Patent number: 4445988
Abstract: A method for detecting low levels of plastic deformation in metal articles comprising electrolytically etching a flow free surface of the metal article with nital at a current density of less than about 0.1 amp/cm.sup.2 and microscopically examining the etched surface to determine the presence of alternating striations. The presence of striations indicates plastic deformation in the article.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: September 29, 1980
Date of Patent: May 1, 1984
Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Department of Energy
Inventors: Arthur F. Steeves, Albert E. Bibb
  • Patent number: 4383857
Abstract: A chemical attack polish and polishing procedure for use on metal surfaces such as nickel base alloys and stainless steels. The chemical attack polish comprises Fe(NO.sub.3).sub.3, concentrated CH.sub.3 COOH, concentrated H.sub.2 SO.sub.4 and H.sub.2 O. The polishing procedure includes saturating a polishing cloth with the chemical attack polish and submicron abrasive particles and buffing the metal surface.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: July 6, 1981
Date of Patent: May 17, 1983
Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the United States Department of Energy
Inventors: Arthur F. Steeves, Donald P. Buono

  • Patent number: 4300980
Abstract: A double overlapping etch zone technique for evaluation of the resistance of metallic alloys to stress corrosion cracking. The technique involves evaluating the metallic alloy along the line of demarcation between an overlapping double etch zone and single etch zone formed on the metallic alloy surface.
