Publication number: 20200048774Abstract: A process for surface activation or depassivation of an article, in particular an alloy, by immersion of the alloy in an aqueous acid solution. The surface activation methods of the present invention can be performed during a relatively short period of time and achieve reductions in production costs and provide environmental friendliness as compared to prior art processes. In a further embodiment, after surface activation, the article is immersed in a second liquid that prevents re-formation of a passivating oxide layer on the surface of the article. In a further embodiment the surface-activated alloys are subjected to surface engineering by a process that infuses carbon or nitrogen through the surface at a temperature sufficiently low to suppress precipitation of carbides or nitrides.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 13, 2019Publication date: February 13, 2020Inventors: Zhen Li, Frank Ernst, Harold Kahn, Arthur Heuer

Publication number: 20060289088Abstract: A method for surface treating a titanium gas turbine engine component. The method includes providing a gas turbine engine component having a titanium-containing surface. The component is heated to a temperature sufficient to diffuse carbon into the titanium and below 1,000° F. The surface is contacted with a carbon-containing gas to diffuse carbon into the surface to form carbides. Thereafter, the carbide-containing surface is coated with a lubricant comprising a binder and a friction modifier. The binder preferably including titanium oxide and the friction modifier preferably including tungsten disulfide. The coefficient of friction between the surface and another titanium-containing surface is less than about 0.6 in high altitude atmospheres.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 11, 2005Publication date: December 28, 2006Applicant: GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANYInventors: Robert Bruce, Arthur Heuer, Gary Michal, Frank Ernst

Publication number: 20060048862Abstract: The present invention relates to surface hardening of a metal surface of a work piece formed of titanium and titanium alloys. The method comprises the steps of heating the work piece; exposing the metal surface to a nitrogen gas having a partial pressure lower than about 10?2 Pa; and maintaining the work piece in the nitrogen gas so that nitrogen is absorbed onto the surface of the work piece and diffused into the work piece for a desired distance while preventing the formation of nitrides on the surface of the work piece and within the work piece.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 3, 2005Publication date: March 9, 2006Inventors: Frank Ernst, Arthur Heuer, Gary Michal

Patent number: 4093982Abstract: A single chip large scale integration processor possesses its own on-chip control storage array while including the ability to also address supplemental off-chip control storage and to use such off-chip supplemental storage in substitution for portions of the on-chip storage. The processor further includes simplified arithmetic and logic (ALU) circuitry wherein the adder circuit has portions selectively gated to perform other functions with a reduced logic circuit requirement. Processor function is also enhanced by providing a read only storage (ROS) array in association with the ALU to provide multiple register loading and control functions in response to certain addresses. The processor also includes memory control circuitry that permits a group of like processors to access a single, external memory on a dynamic, prioritized basis.Type: GrantFiled: May 3, 1976Date of Patent: June 6, 1978Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Dale Arthur Heuer, Phillip Christian Schloss, Larry Lloyd Schroeder

Patent number: 4025908Abstract: A read only memory is organized as a matrix of field effect transistors wherein logic levels are determined by the presence or absence of a gate which permits transistor action. The memory is addressed using a gate decode tree which selects the gates of a column of matrix devices and a source decode tree which selects the source lines of a row of matrix devices. Sensing of the logic level at a selected location is accomplished by a change of state output sense circuit which dynamically senses and provides a static output using a polarity hold circuit. Clamped, boot-strapped inverter circuits are provided in both input and output circuitry to maintain voltage, at selected internal nodes at a voltage intermediate predetermined minimum and maximum values.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 1975Date of Patent: May 24, 1977Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: Ronald Lyle DeRemer, Dale Arthur Heuer
